How to Show You Care as a Leader in English"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Are you good at showing colleagues you care?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may be more difficult in English than in your first language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen in today and learn a new expression that shows you care about your coworkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-watches-and-work\"><strong>Watches and work<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle asks Lindsay if she wears a watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay responds that she wears a smart watch that tracks her steps, sleep, and exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle mentions she has worn a FitBit that is a similar device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She contemplated getting an Apple watch but it is too expensive and her kids might just take it and play with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s episode, Lindsay and Michelle are going to share an idiom with the word &#8220;watch&#8221; that is super useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle\u2019s friend used this in a conversation which inspired the episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He used the idiom \u201cnot on my watch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay agrees that it is a great idiom and is happy to discuss this further in today\u2019s episode with Michelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-not-on-my-watch\"><strong>Not on my watch<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This idiom means a situation will not happen when you\u2019re in charge or not while you\u2019re the one responsible for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a way to say that when something is under your care, you will fulfill your responsibility to look after it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use this in everyday conversations as well as in the business setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It helps you explain who oversees something, how something happened, or if there is an issue you want to address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I feel terrible that this hack happened on my watch. I take full responsibility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bill got an award for all the improvements that happened on his watch with the team. We are so proud of him.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since this happened on Tracy\u2019s watch, she should be the one to fix it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Failure is not an option on my watch! We will be working on this all night. I\u2019ll order us dinner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-positive-or-negative\"><strong>Positive or negative?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle asks Lindsay if this is used more for something positive or negative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay thinks that this expression is more often used when something goes wrong, but not always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes you might hear \u201cnot on MY watch\u201d where the stress is on \u2018my.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This where you emphasise on you being responsible or influence on something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are other examples via mini roleplays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In this first scenario, Lindsay and Michelle are talking about a policy at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I\u2019m thinking we should change the policy to account for the changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Oh no! Not on MY watch. It\u2019s WAY too soon to do that.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the next scenario, Michelle is talking about losing her job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>I really think I might lose my job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Oh no! You won\u2019t! Not on MY watch. I have some say in this!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-expressions\"><strong>Other expressions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a variety of ways you can use the idiom \u201cnot on my watch\u201d but there is another expression that has the same meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The phrase is <strong><em>\u201cnot if I have anything to do with it.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are other roleplay scenarios to give you an idea of how to use this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I think Tim might be thinking of leaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Not if I have anything to do with it. I\u2019m going to talk with him.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Another expression is <strong><em>\u201cnot while I\u2019m in charge\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, similar to the first idiom introduced in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is an example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis all happened when I was in charge. Blame me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, you can also use <strong><em>\u201cwhen I&#8217;m in control.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is an example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s see&#8230; The mistake happened when Lucy was in control. We should ask her.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are two roleplays from Lindsay and Michelle using the English tips and vocabulary shared in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help you better understand how to use them in your own daily conversations in English either at work or with friends and family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Michelle and Lindsay are colleagues reviewing a mistake that happened during a presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> I just can\u2019t believe this happened while I was in charge.
