{"id":75182,"date":"2025-03-26T14:10:31","date_gmt":"2025-03-26T14:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/?p=75182"},"modified":"2025-03-26T14:13:10","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T14:13:10","slug":"grammar-for-english-interruptions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/grammar-for-english-interruptions\/","title":{"rendered":"AEE 2374: Past Progressive Grammar for English Interruptions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>What is your main challenge with speaking English fluently?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key sign of a fluent speaker is being able to express your complex thoughts using correct grammar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen in today as Lindsay and Aubrey share tips on using the past progressive correctly in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-were-you-doing\"><strong>What were you doing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey asks Lindsay what she was doing before they started recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay responds that she was catching up on emails at the start of her day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This would likely be a common answer for many people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s amazing how email can take over your day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay then asks Aubrey the same question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey responds that she did a Peloton ride that morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She shares that it is fun to do live rides but she also joins prerecorded classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This conversation included past progressive grammar structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the continuation of a two-part series about past progressive, often called past continuous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-past-progressive-sentence-structure\"><strong>Past progressive sentence structure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The past progressive tense is used for interrupted actions or simultaneous actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey dive into these two ways to use past progressive tense with examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-when-i-was-doing-something-something-else-happened\"><strong>#1: When I was doing something, something else happened.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first part of the sentence is an adverb clause, and the second part is an independent clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The structure looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>while\/when + subject + past progressive [was\/were + verb-ing] + subject + past simple verb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When I was eating breakfast, I spilled my orange juice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While I was fixing the car, she handed me tools and kept me company.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that you should always use a comma after an adverb clause when it comes at the beginning of a sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is because an adverb clause that starts a sentence is considered an introductory element and requires a comma to separate it from the main clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-i-did-something-while-something-else-was-happening\"><strong>#2: I did something while something else was happening.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first part of the sentence is an independent clause, and the second part is an adverb clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The structure looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>subject + past simple verb + while\/when + subject + past progressive [was\/were + verb-ing]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this flipped structure, no comma is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You called me when I was shopping.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He got home while I was making dinner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay from Lindsay and Aubrey using the vocabulary and tips shared in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help you better understand what you learned today in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1394-how-to-zero-in-on-deeper-conversations-in-english\/\">English conversation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Aubrey are classmates and Aubrey missed class last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>Where were you last week?<br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> I went to the beach. It was amazing.<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> What?! I was stuck in class while you were playing at the beach?!<br><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>I\u2019m sorry! Actually, though\u2026 Can I get your notes?<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>Seriously?!<br><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>I\u2019ll owe you one! When I was hanging out on the sand, I thought \u2018I hope Lindsay is taking notes so I can get them from her.\u2019<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>I bet!
