When the hot air is cooling down, you can go out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey says that fall in Arizona is not pleasant because the temperature is so hot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay\u2019s follow-up question was really interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She used the word \u2018but\u2019 to compare these seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-today-s-question\"><strong>Today&#8217;s question<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s episode is inspired by a YouTube viewer\u2019s question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>What a good morning, big thanks to you Lindsey &amp; is used to introduce contrasting ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-examples\"><strong>Examples<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I was supposed to have class today but it was canceled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We don\u2019t usually eat out but we didn\u2019t feel like cooking today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When talking about contrasting thoughts, your tone changes to emphasize the contrast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have heard that \u2018but\u2019 should not be used at the start of a sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this is acceptable for informal conversations and writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For business writing or formal writing, you should avoid starting a sentence with \u2018but.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Mini roleplay<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I\u2019m leaving at 4:30 for the game.<br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> But I thought you had to be there at 4:00 pm.<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> They pushed it back and it starts at 5:00 pm now.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-choose-though-or-but\"><strong>How to choose &#8216;though&#8217; or &#8216;but&#8217;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you need to emphasize the contrast, it\u2019s recommended to use \u2018though\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also use \u2018though\u2019 when you spontaneously realize a comparison or emphasis as you\u2019re talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples of comparing \u2018but\u2019 and \u2018though.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of these sentences as a conversation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019m hoping Mark comes to the party, <strong><em>BUT <\/em><\/strong>he didn\u2019t come last time so I doubt it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m hoping Mark comes to the party, <strong><em>THOUGH<\/em><\/strong> he didn\u2019t come last time so I doubt it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice that with \u2018though\u2019 there is an emphasis on the contrast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means that Mark most likely won\u2019t attend the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-expressions-with-but-and-though\"><strong>Other expressions with \u2018but\u2019 and \u2018though\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many interesting expressions in English use the word \u2018but\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we share two of these that you can use in your daily conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-no-ifs-ands-or-buts\"><strong>#1 No ifs, ands, or buts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This just means you are certain and definite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You won\u2019t take no for an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We are going to Disneyland this year. No ifs, ands, or buts!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-no-buts\"><strong>#2 No buts!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an expression you can use to tell someone you won\u2019t accept any excuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also say \u2018no excuses\u2019 which has a similar meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>You\u2019re coming to my party Saturday, right?<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Well, I\u2026<br><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>No buts! You have to be there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay from Lindsay and Aubrey using the phrases shared in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help you use these in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/unfamiliar-conversation-at-work\/\">English conversation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Aubrey are at a family reunion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I\u2019m so glad you made it! Something always comes up but this time I was like, \u201cI\u2019m going! No ifs, and, or buts!\u201d<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> That\u2019s what my mom said to me when I told her I had to work.
