or &#8220;You need to listen to AEE in order to not miss great English tips!&#8221;?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Thank you!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Mauro<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-use-not\"><strong>How to use &#8220;not&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be difficult to use the word \u2018not\u2019 correctly when negating something or sharing something hasn\u2019t been done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey asks Lindsay which one she thinks sounds correct?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cYou need to listen to AEE in order not to miss great English tips!&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;You need to listen to AEE in order to not miss great English tips!&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay says the latter sounds correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey says it can be tricky because both might sound natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-grammar-tips-for-not\"><strong>Grammar tips for \u2018not\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey says that there are two grammar issues with the sentences Mauro shared in his question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are splitting subordinating conjunctions and splitting infinitives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither are incorrect grammar but many people will have a preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey share some grammar tips so you can be guided on how to use this structure properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-subordinating-conjunctions\"><strong>#1: Subordinating conjunctions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018In order to\u2019 is a subordinating conjunction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this structure, when these have more than one word, they\u2019re a chunk that needs to be kept together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We use \u2018in order to\u2019 with an infinitive form of a verb to express the purpose of something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In order to finish in time, we need to meet this week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In order to not finish late, we need to meet this week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar subordinating conjunctions are: \u2018as long as&#8217;, &#8216;whether or not&#8217;, &#8216;even though.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also wouldn\u2019t split it with adverbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Correct: <\/span><\/strong>We already made plans in order to get everything scheduled early.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Incorrect: <\/span><\/strong>We made plans in order already to get everything scheduled early.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-splitting-infinitives\"><strong>#2: Splitting infinitives<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is absolutely fine to split infinitives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is still grammatically correct to do so and a lot of native English speakers do it all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The normal form of a negative infinitive is &#8220;not to (insert verb)&#8221;, in all contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Try not to miss any episodes of the podcast!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The form &#8220;to not (verb)&#8221; is still grammatically correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is used in this structure to convey a special meaning or emphasis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Try to not miss any episodes of the podcast!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay from Lindsay and Aubrey using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/understand-this-english-grammar\/\">grammar tips<\/a> shared in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will be helpful for you to understand how to apply these in your conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Aubrey are at a state fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I want to try all of these rides!<br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> I actually need to avoid the Zipper if I want to not get sick. <strong><em>(to not X &#8211; used for emphasis)<\/em><\/strong><br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> No worries! I\u2019ll try not to be too sad about missing that one. <strong><em>(not to X &#8211; normal form for negative infinitive)<\/em><\/strong><br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> I have to leave at 9.
