{"id":74677,"date":"2024-11-29T18:27:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-29T18:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/?p=74677"},"modified":"2024-11-29T18:30:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-29T18:30:01","slug":"3-ways-to-describe-your-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/3-ways-to-describe-your-job\/","title":{"rendered":"Business English 340: What Do You Do? 3 Ways to Describe Your Job"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Do you describe your career differently depending on who you are speaking to?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We often phrase things differently according to the relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of information we share will also be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen in as Lindsay and Michelle share how they respond when sharing about their career with different people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-talking-about-your-job\"><strong>Talking about your job<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay asks Michelle if she describes her career differently depending on who she speaks to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle answers that she absolutely does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She does not share certain details depending on who asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She always considers who she\u2019s speaking to and the amount of time she has to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s episode is going to discuss how you should tailor or custom your response based on who you\u2019re speaking with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Michelle have touched this topic a bit during episode <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/3CcWUi5cJxqIs98znE594T\"><strong>BE 332: Don\u2019t Hit a Brick Wall When Asking Someone About Their Job.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a really important connection topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s important because we need to be prepared to talk to many different people about work and not just people in the business world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You want to be able to frame what you say to the people you\u2019re talking to build a stronger connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can bring you closer to people and even perhaps help with networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-job\"><strong>What is the job?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In this episode, Lindsay and Michelle are going to do something a bit different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will take one particular job and explain different ways to describe that job depending on who you are talking to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will talk about how you can build your own responses so you can be prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To start, Lindsay and Michelle share that they will roleplay as a product marketer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine you do marketing for a makeup company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will share conversations with three different people you might meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll see what might be said to each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often there would be more of a back and forth, but for this exercise, Lindsay and Michelle are focusing on the differences in language generally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-teenager\"><strong>#1 Teenager<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conversation:<\/strong><br><em>I\u2019m a marketer for a makeup company. What that means is I find ways to get as many people as possible to know about our company\u2019s makeup and understand why they should buy it. So, basically, I might use social media, flyers, or even contest promotions to get people excited about the makeup so they want to buy it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s dissect this!<\/strong><br>You can take note of the following vocabulary used in this scenario:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWhat this means is\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cBasically\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cA Marketer is someone who\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The words above are great starters to your sentence when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/asking-someone-about-their-job\/\">sharing about what you do<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also note some basic language used so that the listener would be able to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vocabulary is adjusted in this scenario to relate to a teenager who may not be familiar with your job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-colleague-in-your-industry\"><strong>#2: Colleague in your industry<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conversation:<\/strong><em><br>I\u2019m head of the product marketing team over at Sparkle. Specifically, I work cross-functionally with the creative team and use market research to analyze current trends in the industry. We utilize a lot of social media and other typical marketing strategies like SEO to ramp up and gauge interest.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s dissect this!<\/strong><br>You can take note of the following vocabulary used in this scenario:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cSpecifically\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of jargon link: \u201cramp up\u201d or \u201cSEO\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With this type of conversation, it may be easier to talk and share what you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can easily use jargon related to your job because you know the person you\u2019re talking to will have knowledge of your speciality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite not working for the same company, being in the same industry will give them general knowledge in the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-adult-friend-in-a-different-industry\"><strong>#3: Adult friend in a different industry<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conversation:<\/strong><br><em>I work in product marketing, so I supervise the marketing team at Sparkle cosmetics. Have you heard of it? I work with my team to do a lot of social media strategizing and ads, so a lot of my days are filled with meetings about consumer trends and finding ways to reach new customers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s dissect this!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use the phrase, \u201cHave you heard of it?\u201d to check if the person you\u2019re talking to is familiar with what you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can still use more advanced language than you would for a teenager, but not quite as specific as the usage of the term \u201csocial media strategizing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another good way to share what you do is sharing what you do on a typical day at your job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay from Lindsay and Michelle using the tips and strategies shared in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Michelle are peers at a work conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They know each other but do not work for the same company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They work in hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>So good to see you again, Michelle!<br><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>You too! I heard you have a new position?<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>Yes!<br><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>How\u2019s it going? What\u2019s your role now?<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>It\u2019s good, thanks! So now I\u2019m head of customer relations.<br><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Nice!<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> So now I work cross functionally with the VP and we analyze the entire customer experience, start to finish. We use a lot of the typical strategies your\u2019e used to in your role to try and ramp up bookings as well.<br><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>That sounds great!
