{"id":74599,"date":"2024-11-10T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-10T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/?p=74599"},"modified":"2024-11-08T17:20:31","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T17:20:31","slug":"asking-someone-about-their-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/asking-someone-about-their-job\/","title":{"rendered":"Business English 332: Don&#8217;t Hit a Brick Wall When Asking Someone About Their Job"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Do you want to ask deeper questions when someone tells you about their job?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen in to today\u2019s episode and learn the vocabulary to use to keep the conversation going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help you build connections when someone shares about their work experience and what they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-talking-about-jobs\"><strong>Talking about jobs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle asks Lindsay if she ever met someone whose job title confused her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay answers that she has experienced that and it can happen a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are times that you might hit a brick wall when you\u2019re trying to figure out what someone does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might find yourself trying to find the words to start a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are certain jobs that are a little bit more straightforward than others when you describe them to someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>doctor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lawyer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>teacher<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But there are other positions where someone might say what they do and it\u2019s a little unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-you-know-your-friends-jobs\"><strong>Do you know your friends&#8217; jobs?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle then asks Lindsay if she has friends whose jobs she doesn&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay responds that she has a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She then mentions that it makes her think of the movie Father of the Bride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this film, Steve Martin\u2019s character asked her daughter\u2019s fianc\u00e9 about his job and his answer was \u201cindependent communications consultant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They mention that on the TV show Friends, no one knew what Chandler did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-career-questions-to-ask\"><strong>Career questions to ask<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Today you&#8217;ll learn how to ask about careers that are unclear based on a job title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a huge time for connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It shows you are interested in this person and what they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle asks Lindsay when she is in the position of not knowing what someone does, does she usually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1744-four-ways-to-ask-your-work-colleague-about-their-interests\/\">dig deeper<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay answers that it is a good way to connect and there are many questions you can ask to be able to learn more about someone\u2019s career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some sample questions Lindsay and Michelle suggest you can use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>That sounds interesting. What is involved in that?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wow! I\u2019m sorry I\u2019m not that familiar with that industry. Can you explain it to me?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What projects do you typically work on?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How did you get into that industry?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The last question doesn\u2019t directly ask what the person does in their job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it will give you an understanding about their history which can give you clues about their job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-different-industries\"><strong>Different industries<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay asks Michelle what people\u2019s reactions are when she shares what she does and what industry she works in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle shares that sometimes it can be a little confusing to talk about her own job because she has several positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To simplify, Michelle says she co-hosts a podcast for teaching English and teaches ESL to adults in college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to know the common questions to expect about your job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should be ready with answers when talking about the details of your career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay from Lindsay and Michelle using the tips shared in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help you better understand how to continue a conversation about someone\u2019s work and career experiences without hitting a brick wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Michelle are talking at a party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> So what do you do?<br><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>I\u2019m an ad creator at a boutique.<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>That sounds interesting. What is involved in that?<br><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Well, I typically do a lot of storyboarding and filming for this boutique to get the word out.<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Oh, so marketing.<br><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Absolutely.<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>How did you get into that industry?<br><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>I studied it in college and grad school! I worked for a larger corporate company, but switched to working with smaller companies and I love it.<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>That\u2019s great!<br><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>What do you do?<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>I\u2019m a communications accountant.<br><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Wow! I\u2019m sorry I\u2019m not familiar with that industry.
