Because I know we ask with \u2018could\u2019 only in the past.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Thanks\u2764\u2764<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>@MohamedaMj33<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tricky-grammar\"><strong>Tricky grammar<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of the words \u2018can\u2019 and \u2018could\u2019 may be confusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be tricky to figure out whether to use \u2018can\u2019 or \u2018could\u2019 when asking questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the word \u2018could\u2019 isn\u2019t just for referring to the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also be used as a polite form of \u2018can\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey will dive more into this in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will share real tips and tricks for you to easily understand and use this grammar structure appropriately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-can\"><strong>#1: Can<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u2018can\u2019 is a modal verb, which is a type of auxiliary verb that indicates ability, possibility, suggestion, or obligation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We use \u2018can\u2019 in several different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the different ways you can use them with some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Asking for permission: <\/strong>&#8220;Can I borrow your pen?&#8221; or &#8220;Can I ask you for a favor?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Making requests: <\/strong>&#8220;Can you call back later?&#8221; or &#8220;Can you grab me that book?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Making offers:<\/strong> &#8220;Can I help you with anything?&#8221; or &#8220;Can we do anything for you?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reproaching:<\/strong> &#8220;Can you please stop making that noise?&#8221; or &#8220;Why can&#8217;t you just be nice to her instead of upsetting her?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-could\"><strong>#2: Could<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u2018could\u2019 has the same meaning but \u2018can\u2019 is considered colloquial, while \u2018could\u2019 is more polite and formal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you look at the examples above, you can replace \u2018can\u2019 with \u2018could.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Could you pass me the bread, please?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Server:<\/em><\/strong> Could I get you anything else?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Could\u2019 can also be used to indicate possibility in the present and future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We could have gone out but we decided to stay home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You could win the lottery if you buy a ticket.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also use \u2018could\u2019 to refer to something that was generally possible or an ability that someone generally had in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When I was younger, I could lift weights without being sore the next day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When we first met, we could talk for hours on the phone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay using the tips and tricks shared in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help you see whether to use either \u2018can\u2019 or \u2018could\u2019 in your conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Aubrey and Lindsay are reminiscing about their childhood summers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>When I was a kid, I could run around all day and never get tired! (past tense)<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>Same! I can\u2019t do that now! (indicating ability \/ could say \u201cI couldn\u2019t do that now!\u201d)<br><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>Did you hang out with friends a lot in your neighborhood?<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Oh yeah &#8211; we\u2019d go to the neighbors\u2019 and say, \u201cCan Marie come out and play?\u201d (permission\/request)<br><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>Same. We\u2019d all play in the backyard until my mom would come out and say, \u201cCan you please stop making such a racket! (reproaching)<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>And then the backyard would be a disaster and we\u2019d have to clean up. My friends were pretty good about asking how they could help.
