class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-politics-in-america\"><strong>Politics in America<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey want to give you the tools and vocabulary to be able to participate in an interesting conversation about the elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s U.S. Presidential election may be the most important election of the last 50 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of people will be talking about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be discussions about who the president should be in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey encourage you to connect about politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a social interaction that can be valuable for you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/how-to-agree-in-business-english\/\">make strong connections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You want to have the expressions and vocabulary to be able to share your thoughts or even ask questions and learn from others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-background-on-u-s-politics\"><strong>Background on U.S. politics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before getting into the vocabulary, Lindsay and Aubrey share a bit of background about the U.S. presidential elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two main parties that have a presidential candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the Democratic party and the Republican party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s vital to understand the difference between the two in terms of their advocacies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also hear the terms \u2018left\u2019 and \u2018right\u2019 when referring to the Democrats and Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Democrats are the left party and Republicans are the right party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-democratic-party\"><strong>#1: Democratic Party<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Advocates for abortion rights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advocates for voting rights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advocates for LGBTQIA+ rights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Action on climate change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moves for the legalization marijuana<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advocates for healthcare reform<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advocates for child care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advocates for paid sick leave<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advocates for supporting unions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hands off on foreign policies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-republican-party\"><strong>#2: Republican Party<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Restricting legality of abortion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discouraging or prohibiting recreational drugs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pro gun ownership or have less restriction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Opposition to LGBTQIA+ rights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supports foreign policy which is more for promoting democracy with force and supporting countries that uphold democracy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-less-popular-parties\"><strong>Less popular parties<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are other parties but they don&#8217;t have nearly as much support as the two main parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may hear about other parties<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Libertarian party<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Green party<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Constitution party<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When someone decides to vote for a candidate in one of these parties, it basically wastes the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is because there are a lot more supporters in the two main parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vocabulary-to-know\"><strong>Vocabulary to know<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is some vocabulary to know when you join a conversation regarding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1351-prepare-yourself-for-political-conversations-in-english\/\">politics in the U.S.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will give you the foundation you need to participate in these discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-party\"><strong>#1: Party<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This refers to a group of persons organized to acquire and exercise political power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many different parties in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each has different stances on various issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-candidate\"><strong>#2: Candidate<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A candidate is a person nominated for election to a political office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are usually two main candidates for voters to choose from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many are frustrated with this two-party system because they&#8217;d like more choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-independent\"><strong>#3: Independent<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a voter who doesn\u2019t align themselves with a party and votes on issues instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They register as an independent which means they&#8217;re not affiliated with a party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-registered-to-vote\"><strong>#4: Registered to vote<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who wants to vote in the U.S. must register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must provide certain documentation to be able to register as a voter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the U.S., you must be 18 years old to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different states have different registration requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey shares that registration in Arizona has to happen at least 30 days before an election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-ballot\"><strong>#5: Ballot<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This refers to the process of voting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are selecting who you want to win, typically in secret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the U.S., there are usually small and temporary walled booths set up in public buildings like a library, court house, community center, school, or a fire station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-absentee-ballot\"><strong>#6: Absentee ballot<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These are ballots that are also called a \u2018mail-in ballot\u2019 or \u2018mail-in voting.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay shares that she does this because she lives in the state of Colorado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She finds mailing her ballot easy and convenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is often a long queue on election day and it can be time-consuming to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are eight states that automatically mail everyone a ballot but in the other states, you would need to request a mail-in ballot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay from Lindsay and Aubrey using the vocabulary shared in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is for you to better understand how these phrases are used in a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Aubrey and Lindsay are discussing where they will vote in the upcoming election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>I usually get a mail-in ballot so I don\u2019t have to wait in lines. What about you?<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I like to go to a polling place on election day. I usually go to a school near my home.<br><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>I have neighbors that are both Democrat and Republican but no one really puts up signs.<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>I have a neighbor that volunteers for the Libertarian party. I think she\u2019s an Independent.<br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> That\u2019s awesome.
