It helps me quite a lot in using and learning English.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I am working in an international IC design house in Taiwan now, English is the official and daily language we use. There are lots of meetings we have to do in English; most of the time we have to do the presentation in highlight and lowlight topics. But I am a little confused in the definition of the highlight and lowlight. Is that a good thing to be spoken as highlight? Bad thing to be the lowlight?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Please help.<\/em><\/p>\n<cite>Thanks,<br>DD<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The terms \u2018highlights\u2019 and \u2018lowlights\u2019 are PowerPoint terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Lowlight\u2019 is not commonly used in the U.S. business world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not used as the opposite of &#8216;highlight&#8217; except in hair coloring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u2018highlight\u2019 used in a meeting means to emphasize or focus on something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-meeting-structuring\"><strong>Meeting structuring<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s episode, Lindsay and Aubrey share vocabulary that is similar to the terms \u2018highlight\u2019 and \u2018lowlight\u2019 along with some alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-swot\"><strong>#1: SWOT<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an acronym that stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a good way to break down the agenda of a meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this structure of a meeting it would be organized as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>highlight good things<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>talk about what\u2019s not going so well <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>focus on opportunities you\u2019d want to take advantage of <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>identify any threats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-rose-bud-thorn\"><strong>#2: Rose, bud, thorn<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is another structure similar to SWOT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First you highlight positives or an opportunity then what is a possible roadblock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This paints a bigger picture of any strategies you\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-highlight\"><strong>#3: Highlight<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlight has multiple meanings in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One is as mentioned by the listener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be something that\u2019s being emphasized or you are drawing attention to something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-opposite-of-focus\"><strong>Opposite of focus<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The term \u2018lowlight\u2019 is not used as the opposite of highlight in U.S. business English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t want to focus on something, you can use these terms as the opposite or alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-not-highlight\"><strong>#1: Not highlight<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can say that you\u2019re not highlighting a certain area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is something you don\u2019t want to focus on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t want to highlight our lack of sales in the client meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-skip\"><strong>#2: Skip<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This means you want to move on and are jumping past a topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s highlight growth and skip the summary of how we got there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-not-cover\"><strong>#3: Not cover<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to &#8216;not highlight&#8217;, this means you don\u2019t want to focus on this and are moving to the next topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We probably won\u2019t cover upcoming events today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a roleplay using the vocabulary shared in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help you better understand how to use these words in an English conversation at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Aubrey are in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/interesting-business-idea-in-english\/\">business meeting<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Let\u2019s go over the SWOT from the sales meeting. Aubrey, can you share the strengths?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> We did a good job highlighting the new product features. The presentation on that was really clear and concise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Nice. What about weaknesses?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>We\u2019re still lacking a few things the client is looking for. That could be an issue in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>That brings us to opportunities. I think we&#8217;ve got some good ideas for growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> Absolutely! Excited to see where our dev team will take it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I don\u2019t see any imminent threats as long as they can figure out development timing. Anyone else see something I\u2019m missing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>I agree.
