donate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Education &#8211; educate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However this isn\u2019t always the case, which can cause errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take the word \u2018conversation\u2019 as an example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t turn it into \u2018conversate\u2019 as this word doesn&#8217;t exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, the verb is \u2018converse\u2019 which means to talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example is the word \u2018electrification.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of \u2018electrificate\u2019 which would follow the pattern, the verb instead is \u2018electrify.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means charging with electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also has an idiomatic meaning of sudden excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-can-t-always-add-ion\"><strong>#2: Can\u2019t always add &#8211; ion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We add the suffix -ion to many verbs in English to create their noun form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Locate &#8211; location<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create &#8211; creation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, we don\u2019t do this with every verb, which can cause English learners to make mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a sample sentence that is wrong:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWe were tired because of the inclination on the hike.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of adding &#8216;ion&#8217; to the noun include to create \u2018inclination\u2019, this has a completely different meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inclination means the tendency to act or feel a particular way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a sample sentence using the word \u2018inclination\u2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cI have no inclination to work today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Synonyms are desire, tendency or propensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-confusing-suffixes\"><strong>Other confusing suffixes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example is \u2018convict\u2019 and \u2018conviction.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Convict\u2019 as a verb means the act of declaring someone guilty of a crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a noun, \u2018convict\u2019 refers to a person who is found guilty of a crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then a \u2018conviction\u2019 is a formal declaration that someone is guilty of a crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Conviction\u2019 has a second meaning of a firmly held belief or opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is an example of the second meaning of \u2018conviction\u2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;I\u2019ve always had a firm conviction that everyone deserves justice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay from Lindsay and Aubrey using today\u2019s tips about suffixes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Aubrey are at the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> This is quite the incline! It\u2019s hard to pull the wagon in the sand.<br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> I need to have a conversation with my kids about staying close.<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Yeah, their inclination is to wander pretty far.<br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> Gigi\u2019s hunting seashells.
