When you arrive at the office, do you say hi to everybody there?<\/em> <em>@dursilva<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be nice to greet everyone in the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in the workplace, there are some things you need to consider when deciding whom to greet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out episode <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/what-to-say-in-the-elevator-at-work\/\">BE 270: What to Say in the Elevator at Work<\/a><\/strong> to learn ways to start a conversation when you\u2019re in the elevator with a colleague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-greeting-workmates\"><strong>Greeting workmates<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey talk about three things that you have to consider when deciding whom to greet in the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can help you build good work relationships with your colleagues and superiors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greetings might be different in different countries or cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It depends on the culture and what the norm is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay shares that in Buenos Aires, it\u2019s normal to greet someone with a kiss on a cheek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In America, a greeting like, \u201cHello!\u201d is normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some other things to consider when deciding who to greet at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-consider-your-role\"><strong>#1: Consider your role<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some roles that require greeting or checking in on people at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey shares that in her role as Operations Manager at a small nonprofit organization, she had to go around and greet individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a leader in her role, it was important for her to check in with colleagues and make her presence felt in case they needed any help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re working remotely, you can still greet colleagues via email with a quick morning greeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-consider-company-size\"><strong>#2: Consider company size<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a larger company, greeting everyone is a challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You won\u2019t have time to even say \u2018hi\u2019 to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a good idea to greet those you pass on the way to your office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s definitely easier to go around and greet people when you\u2019re in a smaller company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-consider-time\"><strong>#3: Consider time<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering time and the occasion is another thing to consider before greeting someone in the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can think about how long it\u2019s been since you last saw them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A coworker may have just returned from vacation or is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1334-how-to-organize-a-birthday-party-in-american-culture\/\">celebrating a birthday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that case, it is nice to mention that when you greet them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will make your greeting more warm and thoughtful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-formal-and-informal-greetings\"><strong>Formal and informal greetings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many phrases you can use to greet a coworker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How\u2019s it going?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s up?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good to see you!
