What is the most common way to express that &#8220;you are putting things in the right way, place or spot&#8221; for example: I have a bunch of documents spread all over the table and I want to say that I want to have them all organized, so how can I say that in a natural way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Could it be&#8230; &#8220;let me fix all these documents before we go&#8221;? or &#8220;let me accommodate these documents before we go&#8221;? I&#8217;m kind of lost \ud83d\ude05. In Spanish we say &#8220;d\u00e9jame acomodar estos documentos antes de irnos&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope you can help me. Thanks for everything!!\u2764<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Jessica<\/strong> from Mexico City<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-organization-vocabulary\"><strong>Organization vocabulary<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Jessica&#8217;s question is very insightful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It highlights how something like organization is referred to differently across languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/any-no-or-some\/\">It rarely works to translate directly<\/a> from a learner&#8217;s native language into English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey share that, in American English, &#8220;fix&#8221; and &#8220;accommodate&#8221; are not used when referring to tidying up documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word &#8220;fix&#8221; is a synonym of &#8220;repair&#8221; and &#8220;accommodate&#8221; is a synonym of &#8220;adapt to\u2019.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s episode, Lindsay and Aubrey share with you the vocabulary you can use to say you are putting things in the right place at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we&#8217;ll share a few different words you can use to talk about organizing at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The words used will change depending on what exactly you plan to do with the documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-straighten\"><strong>#1: Straighten<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This means straightening documents and putting them in a pile so they don\u2019t look messy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can also be used for a room or objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019m going to straighten these documents and then we can go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can you straighten the room?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I need to straighten that photograph.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-organize\"><strong>#2: Organize<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This has the same meaning as &#8220;sort&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, you are putting things or documents in order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also refer to filing them in a certain order, such as alphabetical or by similar category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I need to organize these documents before we go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can you organize these papers for me?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-sort\"><strong>#3: Sort<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is similar to the verb &#8220;organize&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The slight difference would be that &#8220;sort&#8221; is used more specifically for items that have to be separated and grouped using their similarities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Organize,&#8221; on the other hand, can mean making a pile clean and tidy regardless of whether items are categorized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019m going to sort these papers before we go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give me a second to sort these documents before the meeting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-put-in-order\"><strong>#4: Put in order<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like most of the vocabulary in this list, this is similar to organize and sort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means making sure everything is lined up and less cluttered than it was originally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019m going to take some time to put these documents in order.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I need to put these papers in order.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay from Lindsay and Aubrey using today\u2019s vocabulary in a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Aubrey and Lindsay are coworkers cleaning out an office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I organized the documents that were in the desk and made a stack of papers to recycle. I\u2019ll just straighten them so they fit in the box.<br><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>Awesome. These stacks over here have been sorted according to priority.<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Nice.
