autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-is-julie-holunga\"><strong>Who is Julie Holunga?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a leadership speaker and trainer, Julie helps others develop communication skills not taught in schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She grew up in Paris, New Delhi, Hong Kong, and New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also worked at Harvard University, helping alumni advance their careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Julie hosted a Ted talk in November of 2020 entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hkQd8EXTd3w\"><strong>\u201cDon\u2019t Let Your Words Sabotage Your Career.\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-her-path-to-communication-coaching\"><strong>Her path to communication coaching<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Juli shares that she has a lot of fun talking about language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She grew up overseas where she started elementary school in Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As early as 6 years old, she recognized a disconnect between languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a young age, she learned to adapt and discovered how to communicate in different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She vividly remembers leaving Hong Kong to go back to New York when she was in seventh grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> She met with a counselor weekly to reintegrate to the new culture and language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was told to avoid talking about moving to different countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The assumption was that those she told would assume she couldn&#8217;t speak English well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That stuck with her and she realized how much sharing her story would help others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She helped those who have gone through the same situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, she is able to help those struggling to make connections in their personal life or work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-language-choices-to-avoid\"><strong>3 Language choices to avoid<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Julie started a career at Harvard and felt intimidated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A mentor shared that she shouldn\u2019t show her inexperience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was advised to not let that get in the way of assisting the alumni at Harvard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking this advice, she positioned herself as an expert and showed confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This way, the support she provides is not devalued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Julie\u2019s Ted Talk, she discusses the tendency of many women to question themselves at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Julie expands about the mindset and phrases to avoid that can undermine a career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-don-t-automatically-apologize\"><strong>#1: Don\u2019t automatically apologize<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your first reaction may be to apologize, even if something was not your fault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Julie shares an example of a client who was responsible for pulling materials for a board meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quarter after quarter, their CFO wouldn&#8217;t send the materials needed for the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She would always be scrambling trying to find data for the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the board meeting arrived, both of them would look bad because they wouldn\u2019t have anything to share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Julie\u2019s client had tried everything to make sure they could produce data every quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She worked with the CFO\u2019s assistant, gave a false early deadline, kept calling, and asked many times in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CFO would inevitably be mad because his part was not prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She would then apologize and it became an opportunity for the CFO to make her look bad and put the blame on her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she consulted Julie, she was taught how to address this so there was a shift in responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-power-of-words\"><strong>Power of words<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The next time it happened, her client did not apologize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, she said, \u201cI hear your frustration.
