Why does it matter?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tried-and-true-tips-for-english-expressions\"><strong>Tried and True Tips for English Expressions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Idioms and expressions often have to be used word for word, like \u2018born and raised.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will sound odd to native speakers if you say &#8216;raised and born.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey will teach three more chunk that follow this pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each has two words that must be shared in the correct order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use this as a mental model where you are working with a pattern of words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These patterns are a rule of thumb you can follow to become fluent faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-tried-and-true\"><strong>#1: Tried and true<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is something that has been proven to be effective or reliable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also hear this in British English as \u2018tried and tested.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This strategy is tried and true so I\u2019m not going to switch it up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My art teacher taught me a tried and true watercolor technique that I love.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-black-and-blue\"><strong>#2: Black and blue<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that something or someone is badly bruised. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bruises can have different colors but we don\u2019t customized it to what color of bruise one has. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I fell yesterday and now my leg is black and blue!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was black and blue the day after the car accident.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-far-and-away\"><strong>#3: Far and away<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that something is different by a lot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is used to emphasize how different two things are. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also hear some native speakers shorten it and say \u2018by far\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>That is far and away the best restaurant I\u2019ve been to.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In New York City, the subway is by far the best way to get around.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay from Lindsay and Aubrey using the phrases in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Aubrey are chatting over lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> I dropped something on my foot yesterday and now it\u2019s black and blue!<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Oh no, sorry to hear it!<br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> It\u2019s ok. I\u2019m far and away the clumsiest person I know.<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Did you ice it?
