Your podcast has been the best way to learn English for a few years now. I\u2019ve also taken Connected Communicator, 3 Keys IELTS, and Business English courses. They all are amazing!!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Today, I have two questions:<br>One, I sometimes get confused by the order of the subject. I heard that \u201cI\u201d always goes to the last and \u201cYou\u201d always goes at the front.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For example, \u201cYou, my mom, and I went shopping today.\u201d and \u201cYou, your mom, and I went to eat dinner today.\u201d Is this rule always applicable?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-grammar-and-politeness\"><strong>Grammar and politeness<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a tricky grammar question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even native English speakers make mistakes with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The short answer is yes, this rule is always applicable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The order of subjects and pronouns shows politeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Politeness is vital for connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When speaking, in order to be polite, we always put the other person first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is just like when you are letting others enter the door first or having them drive in front of you and go ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Asami\u2019s first example, this is the polite version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She mentions \u2018you\u2019 first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incorrect, impolite grammar would be \u201cI, you, and my mom went shopping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may often hear this version from other English speakers and this may not necessarily mean they are being impolite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They may come from a part of the USA where they don\u2019t really follow this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/what-do-you-think\/\">grammar rule<\/a> to show politeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may not be part of their regional dialect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asami\u2019s second example shows the correct grammar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou, your mom, and I went to eat dinner today,\u201d is the polite version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This grammar rule can also be used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1922-avoid-this-mistake-how-to-not-end-business-emails\/\">show respect in the workplace<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-politeness-in-pronouns-and-objects\"><strong>Politeness in pronouns and objects<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The rule of politeness in grammar applies to object pronouns as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whoever is speaking would refer to themself last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-subject-pronouns-she-he-they\">#<strong>1: Subject pronouns (she\/he\/they)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These usually come at the beginning of sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>She and I have been friends forever!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He and I met to discuss the plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-object-pronouns-him-her-them\">#<strong>2: Object pronouns (him\/her\/them)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These most often are at the end of sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are you meeting up with her and me?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They came to the theater with him and me.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-roleplay\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see how this grammar is used in a regular conversation in today&#8217;s roleplay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Aubrey are chatting about what they did last weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>I went on a hike early Saturday morning with my dad.<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Oh nice! Did you go early so it was nice and cool out?<br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> Yep! He, my uncle, and I all met at the trailhead at 7 a.m. What about you? Did you get outside this weekend? I know you usually do!<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>Absolutely! Some friends were in town visiting my sister and they met up with her, my neighbor, and me at a music festival.<br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> Oh wow!
