autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fear-of-speaking\"><strong>Fear of speaking<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt shares about someone he helped speak at her granddaughter&#8217;s wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a high school student, she had a horrific experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After making a comment her teacher was extremely cruel in her criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was traumatic and scarred her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trauma from one&#8217;s past can give us a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/executive-coach-grant-baldwin\/\">fear of public speaking<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need strategies to get past it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-get-inspired\"><strong>Get inspired!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Any fear you have of public speaking can be overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a human being, it can be stressful to be put on the spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, this can be compounded when we&#8217;re learning a second language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Non-native speakers put tremendous pressure on themselves to say things &#8216;right.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-there-is-no-right-way\"><strong>There is no &#8216;right way&#8217;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt shares his belief that there are better ways and worse ways to say things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there is no &#8216;right way.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your job is to serve your audience<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must have the mindset that you are serving those listening to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This takes off that pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You then realize that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/3-steps-to-overcome-perfectionism\/\">the goal is not to speak perfectly<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is to get your message across.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-connection-not-perfection\"><strong>Connection not perfection<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay shares with Matt that we believe at All Ears English in Connection NOT Perfection\u2122.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt agrees wholeheartedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He shares his experience that alleviating pressure improves performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This helps us eliminate what isn&#8217;t needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This, in turn, helps us be clear with our message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-importance-of-structure\"><strong>The importance of structure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt&#8217;s favorite structure is &#8216;What, So what and Now what?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When offering feedback, you can ask these 3 questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can incorporate this into any conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a great way to connect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It gives you a structure so you know what comes next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then all you need to do is add your ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-spontaneous-speaking\"><strong>Spontaneous speaking<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When we&#8217;re put &#8216;on the spot&#8217; it can be difficult to know what to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can feel paralyzed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don&#8217;t always know how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/conversation-starters-about-travel-style\/\">continue the conversation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than tracking the conversation, you might be thinking of what you need to say next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being in the moment and listening is so important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might find yourself thinking about how the conversation might go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You then find that you&#8217;ve missed what has been said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strategies-from-improv\"><strong>Strategies from improv<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt shares the that the primary rule of improv is to do what&#8217;s needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You want to avoid doing more or less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This applies to every conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we&#8217;re trying to do more or less, we won&#8217;t be able to listen and respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this way, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/ielts-energy-1048-the-best-activities-for-studying-ielts-with-friends\/\">practice spontaneity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-things-for-improved-communication\"><strong>3 things for improved communication<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning to be a better communicator takes practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Repetition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reflection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feedback<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We often make the mistake of doing the same thing over and over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, stop to think about what worked and what didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This reflection will help you make sure your repetition isn&#8217;t wasted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-takeaway\"><strong>Takeaway<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Being spontaneous involves preparation and being present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is possible to become better at speaking spontaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it won&#8217;t happen automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt&#8217;s tips will help you ensure that you&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/grammar-tactic\/\">reflecting on your process<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These tips will also help you understand what your goal should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you know your goal, you can know you&#8217;re not wasting time on your language learning journey!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-matt-s-bio\"><strong>Matt&#8217;s bio<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Matt is a lecturer in Organizational Behavior at Stanford University\u2019s Graduate School of Business where he teaches classes in strategic communication and effective virtual presenting.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Matt has helped many presenters worldwide deliver their message on the TED stage, in the World Economic Forum, and at Nobel Prize Presentations.
