writing for 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He recently wrote a column about people using their hands in communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a really fascinating topic and shows you the difference in language all around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is interested in how culture intersects with language and what it means for human connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also wrote a book entitled <a style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-use-common-and-basic-words\">#<strong>1: Use common and basic words<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lane advises using the old dramatic Germanic words of the English language when writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the earthiest and basic words like help, stop, water, fire, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are words that everyone is familiar with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a power of immediacy when using them and when you use a technical term, it will stand out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help you with emphasis because surrounding basic and clear language around hard words is powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are examples of basic words and their complicated counterparts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Earthy = Terrestrial<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hearty = Cordial<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you use fancy words, it just creates distance from the reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to create a connection, you must use words that apply to everyone and easy to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-use-proper-phrasing-and-imagery\"><strong>#2: Use proper phrasing and imagery<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When writing, it&#8217;s usually best to use the most common phrasing you&#8217;ve heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a beginner at writing, it can be tempting to fall into the trap of cliches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must be creative and put yourself in the head of your reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can come up with your own imagery, and you can communicate very directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lane compares these words to shiny jewels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you have technical terms, you can think of them as shiny rare jewels that shine even better when you put it in a simple setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some cliches Lane advises not to use too often:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Blue sky<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thinking out of the box<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The elephant in the room<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The 800-pound gorilla<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Making the effort to write creatively will help you push yourself and improve your language skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to put in constant effort to think and put out fresh and original imagery and language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-use-a-lot-of-periods\">#<strong>3: Use a lot of periods<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the most powerful punctuation you can utilize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This keeps your sentences crisp and direct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When writing, you don\u2019t want to create problems with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/grammar-make-you-happy-go-lucky%ef%bf%bc\/\">complex sentences<\/a> when you don\u2019t use a period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will make your reader confused and they will have a hard time understanding you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a period arrives in a sentence, you give your reader time to pause and think about your meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you keep continuing without a period, you will wear your readers out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay shares that she is reminded of legal documents where sentences are so long and winding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>American vs. European academic writing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay asks Lane about the difference in style between American and European <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/abcs-of-connecting-in-english\/\">academic writing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be different everywhere but Lane reiterates that the Germanic style of words is
