I was just laughing so you didn\u2019t have to stop and explain the joke.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is perfect to explain why you laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWait, you need to fill me in.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a very native thing to say when you want something explained to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can easily happen to you, especially if you\u2019re surrounded by people who don\u2019t share the same language and culture as you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Definitely ask so you will be able to understand what they are all talking about or laughing at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scenario #2: Someone points out that you didn&#8217;t understand<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is possible for someone to point out that you didn&#8217;t understand the joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even more common is that they think you did understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a movie reference mentioned and when you laugh the speaker assumes you have seen it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is something you can say if asked, &#8220;Wasn&#8217;t that awesome?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cOh wait, I didn\u2019t see that. What happened?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cNo, I\u2019m not familiar with that. What\u2019s that about?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases, people would assume you understood because you laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They may then ask a follow-up question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is less common for someone to call you out because they feel you were pretending you understood something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That would be rude and most people don&#8217;t intentionally create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/missed-the-joke-what-to-say-in-english\/\">uncomfortable situations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scenario #3: You misheard<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be situations when you thought you heard something different and you laughed or responded differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, you may assume you know what they&#8217;re about to say and react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they finish their sentence, it might turn out that your assumption was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey shares this happened to her last week and here are phrases to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cOh sorry, I misheard you.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This first sample is much more formal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cOh, my bad! I thought you were going to say something else.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can show in your tone that you are apologetic and then continue to carry on with the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This second sentence can sound a little bit flippant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It works well for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/connect-with-someone-about-the-past\/\">informal situations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>flippant<\/strong>: to be dismissive or treat something as unimportant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can say \u2018my bad\u2019 when you are talking to friends or if you are in an informal conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to respond according to the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay using the tips shared by Lindsay and Aubrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help you better understand today\u2019s lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Aubrey are chatting at a party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>\u2026so then he said it\u2019s just a hint of lemon.<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Hahahahaha<br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> Didn\u2019t you love that scene on <em>Succession<\/em>?<br><strong>Lindsay<\/strong>: Oh no!
