You are both amazing. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I have been learning a lot through your videos. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I never thought English learning can be this easy and fun. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Love the way Michelle says \u201cThank you.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Please make a video on the usage of \u2018would\u2019 to talk about the past.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Many uses of &#8216;would&#8217;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many ways to use \u2018would&#8217; in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For today\u2019s episode, we will focus on just one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Michelle also encourage listeners to check out another episode by the All Ears English team that is relevant to today\u2019s topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is episode <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/must-should-may-and-shall-in-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AEE 1968: Must, Should, May, and Shall in English.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;W<strong>ould\u2019<\/strong> to describe what you used to do<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s focus on referring to something you used to do in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will often hear this being used when talking about a habit in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>She would call her mother every day when she was younger, but now she only calls once a week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every Monday, I would go watch my sister\u2019s softball games.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Discussing routines<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use &#8216;would&#8217; to talk about a routine or things you did often in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will also hear a shortened version of \u2018would\u2019 with a contraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is very common with informal speech and becomes &#8216;they&#8217;d&#8217; or \u2018I\u2019d.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are examples with the shortened version:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>She\u2019d call her mother every day when she was younger, but now she only calls once a week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every Monday, I\u2019d go watch my sister\u2019s softball games.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Grammar structure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The formula to remember is would + base verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few more examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>My dog would follow me all around the house when he was a puppy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My grandmother would write me a letter every day when I was a kid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sample conversations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This way to use \u2018would\u2019 can have a hint of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/describe-formative-people-events-english\/\">reminiscing when talking about your past<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle means there is a touch of wistfulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means a slightly nostalgic feeling caused by thinking about something in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some sample questions to start conversations to be able to use \u2018would\u2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tell me about your birthdays as a kid.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What was it like growing up with your brother?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What fun things did you do together?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is one of your favourite childhood memories?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is another way to see how to use \u2018would\u2019 in a conversation when talking about something you did in the past through roleplay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Michelle are childhood friends and are sharing childhood memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>Remember when we were kids and we would run around the lake a million times?<br><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Oh my goodness yes!
