Avoid these Pronunciation Mistakes in English\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UlopjioTu8w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Confusing English words<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey asks Lindsay if there were there any words that confused her as a kid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay says the pronunciation of the word \u2018island\u2019 threw her off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she was a kid, her favorite book was \u201cThe Island of the Blue Dolphins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the longest time, she pronounced the \u2018s\u2019 in the word \u2018island\u2019 and it took her a while to realize the \u2018s\u2019 was silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay continues to share that she also got confused by the word \u2018colonel.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She would pronounce it as it is spelled but it is pronounced like \u2018kernel.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no \u2018r\u2019 in the word \u2018colonel\u2019 but we pronounce in in English as though there is an \u2018r.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey agrees that these words can be very confusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s episode was inspired by a student who wanted to clarify words that have tricky pronunciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the question from Jeff Wu, a management consultant in Japan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>One other word I struggle with is \u201ccolonel\u201d. There is no &#8220;r&#8221; in the spelling of &#8220;colonel,&#8221; but it is pronounced with an &#8220;r&#8221; sound. Why is that? I searched it on Merriam-Webster, in which I found the origin of the word is an alteration of coronel, from Middle French. But that does not explain why people still pronounce the \u201cr\u201d even after the English spelling is adapted without the \u201cr\u201d? Any ideas why? And from a native perspective, do you feel weird about it?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey and Lindsay both agree that it does feel strange to pronounce \u2018colonel\u2019 so differently from how it is written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can visit a similar episode about pronunciation which is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/category\/intonation-and-stress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AEE 1864: When Can You Choose Your Pronunciation in English?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that episode, the All Ears English team talk about words with multiple correct pronunciations like \u2018realtor\u2019 and \u2018pecan.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Easily mispronounced words<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many English words that can be confusing to pronounce even for native English speakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey are going to share some words that you can be on the lookout for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even native speakers get confused by these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-colonel\"><strong>#1: Colonel<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The definition of this is a military officer who ranks above a major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The French took this word from the Italian word \u2018colonnello\u2019 which came from the word for \u2018column.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It refers to the leader of a column of soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The French altered the spelling and made it \u2018coronel.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the word came to the English language, brought by the French in the mid-1500s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the mid-1600s, the spelling was changed in French to \u2018colonel.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The French changed the pronunciation, but in English the original pronunciation was kept with the &#8216;r&#8217; sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u2018coronel\u2019 is pronounced in English the same as \u2018kernel.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#2: Kernel<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Kernel\u2019 is an entirely different word that means the inner seed of something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of plants have kernels but it is more popularly used to refer to unpopped popcorn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also hear \u2018kernel of truth.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an idiom that means there is a little bit of truth in something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An example is \u201cI see there may be a kernel of truth to what you are saying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We often use this in the negative and say, &#8220;There&#8217;s not even a kernel of truth to that!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-cupboard\"><strong>#2: Cupboard<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u2018cupboard\u2019 is pronounced as \u2018cub-burd.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like \u2018colonel\u2019, the spelling and pronunciation doesn\u2019t match at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Cupboard\u2019 originall was a \u201ccup board.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It referred to a board or table on which cups can be stored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its origin is the Middle Ages, and the &#8220;p&#8221; and &#8220;b&#8221; of the spelling have long since merged in pronunciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is now usually a shelf with closing doors where dishes are kept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Put the dishes in the cupboard, please.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can you get the plates from the cupboard?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-draught\"><strong>#3: Draught<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is often pronounced as \u2018draft\u2019 in American English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Draught or draft has its origins in the Old English &#8216;dragan,&#8217; which means to drag, draw or pull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Draught or draft is the past participle of \u2018drawn\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also mean air or wind that is coming from outside and entering a house or a closed area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018gh\u2019 is a digraph that was originally pronounced in German \u2018-ach\u2019 or Scottish \u2018-loch\u2019, which transitioned to \u2018f\u2019 in Middle English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>American English usually spells these as &#8216;draft&#8217; or the adjective &#8216;drafty.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He prefers draught beer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can you close the window? There\u2019s a draught.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey and Lindsay show you in a roleplay how these confusing words are used in conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Aubrey and Lindsay are at a conference and are talking about a keynote speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>Did you hear that the keynote speaker is a colonel in the military?<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Yes, and I heard he has a terrible reputation.
