Find Out Today!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Empty nester<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we are going to talk about expressions dealing with kids being away from home<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The expression \u2018empty nester\u2019 is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1475-step-up-to-the-plate-and-learn-baseball-idioms-in-english\/\">idiom you can add to your vocabulary.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many other terms as well that are similar to \u2018empty nester.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we&#8217;ll teach a few you can use when talking about children growing up and moving away from their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-flown-the-coop\"># <strong>1: Flown the coop<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This expression is another reference to birds, in this case, chickens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is similar and means a child has left their home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also be used in other situations for escaping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, it&#8217;s used to talk about someone escaping jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Now that my kids have flown the coop, it\u2019s a bit tough<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-retiree\"># <strong>2: Retiree<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a person who doesn\u2019t work anymore after years of working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I\u2019m joining a group of fellow retirees for brunch tomorrow.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I\u2019m a retiree, but I was an accountant<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leaving home in American culture<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In American culture, it is very common for parents to be empty nesters when their children grow up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children often leave home when they hit 18 years old and they either go away for college or move to a new city and pursue a career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some parents may be happy for their kids to go away so they can finally be left alone together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They may enjoy the peace and quiet and even the savings they get because raising their children can be expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other parents feel sad when they become empty nesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their once noisy and activity-filled house is now quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially the case for a parent whose entire day revolves around their kids and it has become their routine for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can take time to adjust to suddenly taking care of only yourself after years of picking up after your kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The child&#8217;s perspective<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From the perspective of kids, it can be difficult to leave their parents behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The real world can be scary once they&#8217;re now outside their comfort zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all love our parents so much and it can be challenging to think of them alone in the home as they grow old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay mentioned that in American culture millennials sometimes come back home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are called boomerang millennials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This happened mostly during the financial crisis and many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/executive-coach-grant-baldwin\/\">experienced being laid off from their jobs or having to close down their business.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be able to get back on their feet, they needed to return home to save money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay from Lindsay and Michelle on how to use these expressions in a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Michelle are friends and their kids have gone off to college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>I can\u2019t believe we are empty nesters now. Well, I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll be a retiree anytime soon, but I\u2019m going to try to enjoy some of the relaxation.<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>Yes.
