I&#8217;m Zehra from Turkey and I\u2019m so thankful to you because I feel my English is getting better since I started listening to your podcast. It&#8217;s so much fun and I really love your energy! And I have one request. Can you talk about must, should, may, and shall? Im always confused while I&#8217;m using them.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Necessity or possibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a common question, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/ielts-energy-882-when-grammar-matters-9-how-modals-add-moxie-to-your-ielts-exam\/\">modal verbs can be confusing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These verbs express necessity or possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The words \u2018must\u2019, \u2018should\u2019, \u2018may\u2019, and \u2018shall\u2019 are all modal verbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is another grammar episodes you may be interested in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/english-grammar-question-answered\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AEE 1937: Didn&#8217;t Versus Wouldn&#8217;t: A Listener&#8217;s English Grammar Question Answered<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to use modal verbs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Michelle will discuss the definitions of these modal verbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Must<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Should<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shall<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They will also provide examples of how to use each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#1: Must<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We use \u2018must\u2019 to give a very strong suggestion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can sound <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1694-learn-english-with-friends-the-tv-show-and-the-people\/\">pushy or insistent<\/a> sometimes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there is another way you can use it positively and show enthusiasm in your request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><br><em>\u201cYou must see that movie. I\u2019m telling you!\u201d<br>\u201cYou must bring your key because I won\u2019t be home to unlock the door later.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#2: Should<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not as strong as \u2018must\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is best to use \u2018should\u2019 when you are making a suggestion or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/sesame-street-star-ammar-sabban\/\">giving advice<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><br><em>\u201cYou should call me if you are in the area.\u201d<br>\u201cI should get that dent in my car fixed soon.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#3: May<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018May\u2019 is used to say something is possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can also be used to permit one to do something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is often confused with \u2018can.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference is that \u2018can\u2019 means you are able and not really giving permission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People \u2018can\u2019 do things and not necessarily \u2018may\u2019 or are allowed to do them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can check out a recent episode related to this here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/best-grammar-episode-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AEE 1857: This May Be the Best Grammar Episode Ever<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most native English speakers still use \u2018can\u2019 instead of \u2018may\u2019 despite the difference in definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><br><em>\u201cI may call her after the game.\u201d<br>\u201cMay I use the restroom?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#4: Shall<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We use \u2018shall\u2019 to talk about the future when the future is unknown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also use \u2018shall\u2019 to suggest something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will mostly hear native English speakers say \u2018will\u2019 instead of \u2018shall\u2019 because it sounds too formal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><br>\u201cI shall be there by 12.\u201d<br>\u201cShall I go there tomorrow to buy the dress?\u201d<br>\u201cWhat shall we buy her for her birthday?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Michelle share a roleplay using the modal verbs \u2018must\u2019, \u2018should\u2019, \u2018may\u2019, and \u2018shall.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will show how each is used in a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this roleplay, Michelle is new at the office and Lindsay is showing her around. Lindsay is her colleague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Okay so where do these files go?<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> You MUST put them in that cabinet in the back.<br><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Ok got it. Thanks! MAY I drop them off there when I leave?<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>Sure! SHALL we take a break and get lunch?<br><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Yes! Any good places around here?<br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>I MAY try a new salad place down the street if you want to join.<br><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> I\u2019d love to. And you SHOULD try the sandwich shop next door.
