{"id":68483,"date":"2023-03-29T22:54:11","date_gmt":"2023-03-29T22:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/?p=68483"},"modified":"2023-03-30T05:53:23","modified_gmt":"2023-03-30T05:53:23","slug":"break-out-higher-scores-with-phrasal-verbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/break-out-higher-scores-with-phrasal-verbs\/","title":{"rendered":"IELTS Energy 1264: Break Out Higher Scores with Phrasal Verbs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Phrasal verbs can help you boost your IELTS scores!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put away your doubts and break out your notes because this is an amazing episode! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll teach you 2 phrasal verbs to boost vocabulary scores on both IELTS Speaking and Writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s question<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A listener sent in a question that inspired today&#8217;s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She asked what the word is for putting away seasonal clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people &#8216;transition&#8217; their wardrobe between seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people would just say they put clothes away and then break out items for the new season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we&#8217;ll dive into both these phrasal verbs and how you can use them on IELTS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Break Out Higher Scores with Phrasal Verbs - IELTS Energy Podcast 1264\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zvvX4uLLxQk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-do-you-need-phrasal-verbs\"><strong>Why do you need phrasal verbs?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You must use idiomatic language on IELTS Speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phrasal verbs often help satisfy this requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of them are idiomatic and have a very different meaning from the base verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn&#8217;t always the case, as in the following examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>start out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>finish up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These meant the same as &#8216;start&#8217; and &#8216;finish&#8217; and aren&#8217;t idiomatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, many phrasal verbs are, including those we&#8217;re sharing today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#1: Put away<\/strong>: store<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One meaning is to store something in a container, drawer or closet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I always put away winter clothing once spring hits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you put away the clean dishes?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It means to put things where they belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are many idiomatic meanings as well!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be asked in Speaking Part 2 to describe a chore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Speaking Part 3, you might be asked about traditional roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Traditionally, women are expected to put away clothes and dishes, but luckily my partner believes he should help with this chore.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#2 Put away: eat a lot<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is high scoring because it&#8217;s rare for a student to use it in this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s very idiomatic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>My son is 11-years-old going on 12 and he really puts away the food!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I made pasta a few nights ago he put away an entire pot of pasta!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to describe people a lot on IELTS!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might come up on general training letters or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/ielts-energy-720-pivot-ielts-speaking-part-2\/\">Speaking Part 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I can&#8217;t believe how much my friend eats. It\u2019s 100% guaranteed!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#3 Put away: scoring a goal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is usually used for balls in nets, both soccer and basketball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Everyone was so stoked when I put it away!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This means you put a ball in a net and scored a goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#4 Put away: going to jail<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Speaking Part 3 or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/do-templates-lower-task-2-scores\/\">Writing Task 2<\/a> you might be asked about crime and punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For felonies that involve harming other people, I think they should be put away for longer periods of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also use this as a hypothetical when describing people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#5 Break out: remove from storage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an antonym to the first meaning of the phrasal verb put away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are easy to remember in pairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I had to break out my daughter&#8217;s skates that I put away years ago.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We usually use it to describe something that&#8217;s been put away for awhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This could be useful for describing a party or special occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I&#8217;m going to break out my fanciest dishes for this party!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We almost never use it but I&#8217;m breaking it out for this event.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#6 Break out: to begin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We often say a fight or a battle will break out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A skirmish broke out after the argument.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>On Part 2 you might be asked to describe a time you argued with a friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is more for a physical fight but can also describe a verbal argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#7 Break out: to become famous<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re often asked about famous people on IELTS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking Part 3 might ask about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/english-listening-practice-for-multiple-speakers-would-you-want-to-be-famous\/\">privacy rights of celebrities<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They really broke out in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was the break out star last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s the idea of someone suddenly becoming famous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#8 Break out: to escape prison<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is another parallel phrasal verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means the opposite of &#8216;put away&#8217;
