Two English Phrasal Verbs you Should be Up For\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jmz8lotxTX4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-something-you-re-always-up-for\"><strong>What\u2019s something you\u2019re always up for?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay is always up for eating dessert at any time of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She will always eat dessert when it&#8217;s offered to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey has lately been up for cheese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She discovered delicious cheeses from Trader Joe\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She likes all cheeses but if she had to pick one, she would choose sharp cheddar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s episode is the second part of a two-part series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous episode was AEE 1960: Start Off your Day with these Phrasal Verbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was inspired by a question from Conrado from Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Hello Lindsay and the whole team at All Ears English. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>My name is Conrado and I live in a monastery in Brazil. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>All of us here who are preparing for a mission in our monastery in Ohio listen to your podcast. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Although I live with two Americans, they couldn&#8217;t explain to me the difference between start out and start off, and also when I&#8217;m up for it and I&#8217;m down with it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Thank you very much for all your work, please keep it up!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Expressions to be &#8216;up for&#8217;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey share that these are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/respond-appropriately-when-someone-shares-news-in-english\/\">fantastic native expressions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They first tackle the phrasal verb \u2018up for\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the definition, how to use it, and some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#1: Up for it<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This expression means to be willing and interested to do something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is rare that you would hear a native English speaker say &#8220;I\u2019m willing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This does not imply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/four-enthusiasm-idioms-in-english\/\">enthusiasm<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather, they would say \u201cYes, I\u2019m up for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><strong>Example:<\/strong><br>Want to go axe-throwing? Yeah, I\u2019m up for it!<br>I\u2019m up for a drink.<br>I\u2019m up for anything or whatever (when lots of options are given)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#2: Not up for it<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the opposite expression to \u2018up for it.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means that you are not willing or interested to do what is asked of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><strong>Example:<\/strong><br>I asked Megan to join us but she wasn\u2019t up for it<br>I\u2019m not up for going out tonight.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#3: Down for<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use this as an alternative to \u2018up for it.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a similar expression to use which means you are willing and interested in doing something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is more casual and playful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the relationship, you might not want to use this in a business setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><strong>Example:<\/strong><br>I\u2019m down for getting a coffee.<br>Want to meet for a coffee? I\u2019m down.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#4: Down with it<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This has a different meaning from \u2018down for.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is used to say you understand or approve of something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><strong>Example:<\/strong><br>I\u2019m down with that idea.<br>Are you down with going out tonight?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#5: Not down with it<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the opposite of \u2018down with.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use this to say you do not understand or do not approve of something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is also a playful way to say you are not okay with something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is light and doesn\u2019t sound too negative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><strong>Example:<\/strong><br>I\u2019m not down with lying to her.<br>He said he was not down with her behavior.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following roleplay highlights the difference between \u2018up for it\u2019 and \u2018down for it.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help you to better understand how to use these terms in a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Aubrey and Lindsay are deciding what to order at a restaurant<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>Want to try the crispy Brussel sprout appetizer?<br><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>I\u2019m down! Sounds delicious. <br><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>What are you thinking for an entree?<br><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>I\u2019m up for either a panini or a club sandwich.
