I<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em> have a question. When I was listening to one of your episodes the other day, I wondered if I ever mentioned a specific year to talk about something that has happened since. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For example, Lindsay said something like \u2018I haven\u2019t had a car since 2004\u2026\u2019 Is it something related to cultural differences, or personal preference? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I have heard something similar a lot and it would be great if you could do an episode about it.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey then summarizes the rest of Tomoko&#8217;s email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She asked this question because it is different in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tomoko shares that they don\u2019t usually give specific dates when talking about the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She wonders if this is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1690-english-conversation-with-multiple-speakers-about-road-rage\/\">cultural difference<\/a> or is about the English language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to share details about the past<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re talking about the past with someone, it is a combination of both culture and preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also consider the relationship between you and the person you\u2019re talking to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It really is up to you how much detail you want to share when talking about your past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want emphasize how long it has been since something has happened to you, you can mention a specific date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/talk-about-k-dramas-in-english\/\">make your conversation more interesting when you share details<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, be careful not to overdo it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to be too detailed and bore the person you\u2019re talking to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharing too many details can also be oversharing and disrupt the connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid losing momentum if you&#8217;re stuck remembering the date your story happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some phrases you can use when you can remember a date in the past to share in your conversation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#1: \u2018I haven\u2019t driven a car <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in years.\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use this to refer to something that happened within a span of five to ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is so native and natural to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s very broad and creates interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2: <strong>\u2018I haven\u2019t exercised <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in ages.\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is more exaggeration in this phrase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn\u2019t necessarily mean it has been a long time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use this to say you haven\u2019t done something in weeks or days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We often exaggerate for extra emphasis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3: <strong>\u2018I haven\u2019t seen movies <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in forever.\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is another exaggeration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It feels the most native and modern. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn\u2019t make sense logically but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/nobody-doesnt-like-all-ears-english\/\">we use it to emphasize<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s perfect for expressing how long you haven\u2019t done something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey share a roleplay to clarify how to share a time or a date when talking about your past in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Aubrey ran into each other in a coffee shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> How are you?
