autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-david-burke-the-slangman\"><strong>David Burke the Slangman<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>David has been known as the Slangman on the Voice of America for the past six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has been helping 300 million listeners around the world understand daily English slang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is also the author of the books <em>Street Speak<\/em> and <em>Biz Speak<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are about popular American English idioms and slang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David has also starred on a TV show called <em>Hey Wordy!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It teaches children about language and culture through music and animation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is very enthusiastic to teach and share slang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has dedicated his time and effort to helping others make connections through communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His passion was sparked at a young age when he felt lost in the French language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He knew how to speak good academic French but when people would use idioms and slang, he couldn\u2019t keep up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This made him realize he could help bridge that disconnect in learning the English language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Slang in the workplace<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can feel isolated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/english-grammar-for-intonation\/\">when you only learn a language from textbooks.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be able to share your ideas but you will have difficulty speaking like a native.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can make it difficult to connect with colleagues in your workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re not on top of expressions and slang, you can misinterpret a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/new-english-slang\/\">It&#8217;s important to use current, relevant slang.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we&#8217;ll discuss some phrases you can use and some you should stay clear of because they aren\u2019t used as commonly anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#1: To run it up the flagpole<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This phrase means sharing information that will be presented to decision makers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This expression is still relevant to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is used often in business English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;I have an idea I&#8217;m going to run up the flagpole.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#2: Let me circle back to you<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This means to return to someone you are talking to or something you want to discuss later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is no longer used as much due to overuse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can say \u201cI\u2019ll touch base with you later\u201d as an alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#3: I don\u2019t have the bandwidth<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This refers to your capacity or energy to tackle something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like \u2018circle back\u2019, this has been used so much that it is being phased out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some words, when used too much, start sounding mechanical. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to be authentic in order to build a relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#4: Synergy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a word made from two words. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is combining \u2018synchronization\u2019 and \u2018energy.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was used a lot used to refer to teamwork or harmonious collaboration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is becoming an outdated expression and is not used as often anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#5: Quiet quitting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The phrase &#8216;quiet quitting&#8217;
