This is Amir, writing from the UAE. I\u2019m one of your fans who listen to your podcasts every day when I commute between my home to my office. I remember several years ago, I read a novel by Shakespeare. Regretfully, I can\u2019t remember its name and I encountered the word \u2018bastinado.\u2019 I think it\u2019s an old-fashioned word and nowadays it can not be used in talking or writing. However, I\u2019m so curious to know that it must be used as a form of a noun or a verb. Take care!\u201d<\/em><\/p><cite>Amir<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Evolving English<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey haven\u2019t heard the word &#8216;bastinado&#8217; before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many words fall out of use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1750-evolving-english-until-versus-till-versus-til\/\">as language evolves<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey researched it and \u2018bastinado\u2019 means to cane or beat the soles of someone\u2019s feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a form of punishment or torture done centuries ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Bastinado\u2019 is a word that is no longer used nowadays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shakespeare for Business English<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many words created by Shakespeare that we use in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/work-out-with-this-phrasal-verb\/\">business English<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsey and Aubrey share three of the most common in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use these words in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1888-be-concise-confident-and-clear-in-business-english\/\">business English.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your colleagues will find it impressive!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will sound articulate and well-read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shakespeare created new words by changing nouns into verbs and verbs into adjectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He would also add prefixes and suffixes to words or combine two different words to make a new word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#1: Lackluster<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>He used this word in the play \u2018As You Like It.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He used it to mean dull or without brilliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shakespeare didn\u2019t use the word \u2018lackluster\u2019 the same way we use it today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, he described a person&#8217;s eyes as lackluster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meaning of this has evolved throughout the years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>lackluster<\/strong>: unimpressive<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In business English today, use it to mean unimpressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Example:<\/strong><br><em>His performance in the job interview was lackluster.<br>She has a lackluster attitude.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#2: Baseless<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Shakespeare used this in his play entitled \u2018The Tempest.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He described a sheer fabric as baseless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to \u2018lackluster\u2019, the current meaning is different from the way he used it in his play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>baseless<\/strong>: without foundation in fact. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Example:<\/strong><br><em>Those are baseless allegations.<br>My ideas are not baseless. Here are the statistics to prove this.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#3: Impartial<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This was used in the play \u2018King Henry IV Part 2.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is used the same as it has been used by Shakespeare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>impartial<\/strong>: without a preference for either choice <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There wasn\u2019t a word that mean the opposite of impartial at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><br><em>Her boss was impartial to her when they first met but now she has great respect for her.<br>Try to stay impartial when you try both products.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following roleplay will show you how to use these words in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/respond-appropriately-when-someone-shares-news-in-english\/\">daily conversation<\/a> in the business world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Aubrey are co-workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are debriefing after interviewing a candidate for the position they are trying to fill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> That was a bit of a lackluster performance. Don\u2019t you think?<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Honestly, it\u2019s very difficult for me to be impartial because, to be honest, he\u2019s my brother-in-law.<br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> Oh really? I didn\u2019t know that.<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I think you should just decide since you can be impartial.<br><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t impressed but to tell you the truth, I couldn\u2019t put my finger on why.
