is a very native English phrase that means you did what you said you would do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means you have kept your promise and taken action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means a lot to our loved ones when we follow through with our promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey recently promised her kids that if they didn\u2019t cry when they got their vaccines, they would get ice cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being late to their next activity, because she had promised her kids ice cream, they went to an ice cream parlor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s episode, the All Ears English team will make good on their promise to teach listeners how to use \u2018would have.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a continuation of episode <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1919-you-will-have-mastered-future-perfect-english-grammar-by-the-end-of-this-episode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AEE 1919: You Will Have Mastered Future Perfect English Grammar by the End of this Episode.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the second part of their answer to a listener question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Two ways to use &#8216;would have<\/strong>&#8216;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two ways you can use the phrase \u2018would have.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll share the grammar for both today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll also get example sentences and a roleplay to help you know how to use this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#1: Past tense of \u2018will have\u2019 <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We use this to talk about something that would usually happen by a certain time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not the most common way to use \u2018would have.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Example:<\/strong><br><em>I called at 8:00 a.m. because I knew he would\u2019ve woken by then.<\/em><br><em>It was 10:00 a.m. Mom would\u2019ve downed three cups of coffee by now.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Downed\u2019 means to drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Native English speakers are sometimes hesitant to use the past participle \u2018drunk\u2019 because it makes them seem like they drank alcohol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s their way of finding a way around saying &#8216;drunk.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#3: Something that did not happen in the past but could have<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the most common construction you will hear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Native English speakers often make mistakes with this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should be using \u2018would have\u2019 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1239-use-conditionals-in-english-all-ears\/\">third conditional structure<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This grammar requires present perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Example:<\/strong><br><em>If you had asked me to be there, I would have come.<br>If you had told me about the party, I wouldn\u2019t have missed it.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The common mistake is using \u2018would have\u2019 twice instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1877-how-multiple-english-verb-tenses-spice-up-a-story\/\">present perfect<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example: \u201cIf you would have asked me to be there, I would have come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a mistake and some may not know it\u2019s incorrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important you use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/impressive-english-grammar\/\">correct grammar<\/a> at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are doing a presentation or preparing reports that require you to compare past figures, it\u2019s important you use the right grammar to communicate at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay to show you how this works in the business world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Aubrey are work colleagues and they are debriefing about a lost account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I think if the sales call had gone better, we would have gotten that account.<br><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>I agree. If we had eliminated a few slides that were less pertinent, our message would have been clearer.<br><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Definitely!
