is often used to refer to places or locations when referring to a specific point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use this to talk about the exact location of a person or object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of people get this confused and use \u2018to\u2019 instead of \u2018at\u2019 when referring to a place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/work-out-with-this-phrasal-verb\/\">sound unnatural<\/a> and happens when you are directly translating from your native language to English. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Examples: <\/strong><\/p><p><em>His chair is at his desk. <\/em><\/p><p><em>I\u2019m waiting at the hotel entrance. <\/em><\/p><p><em>I\u2019m at the gym. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#2: In<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The preposition &#8216;in&#8217; is used to refer to something in an enclosed and defined space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn\u2019t have to be totally enclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A space can be considered enclosed even if it doesn\u2019t have a roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, we say we&#8217;re &#8216;in&#8217; a swimming pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Example: <\/strong><\/p><p><em>The ball is in the pool. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is also used for cities, countries, or other large areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Example: <\/strong><\/p><p><em>I am in the U.S. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It also is used for a metaphorical place that is inside something else. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Example: <\/strong><\/p><p><em>I have so much love in my heart. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#3: On<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is used to refer to something that is touching the surface of something else but not in an enclosed space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Examples: <\/strong><\/p><p><em>The ball is on the grass. <\/em><\/p><p><em>The pen is on the desk. <\/em><\/p><p><em>The kids are on the sidewalk. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bonus preposition tip <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>English students often raise the question of \u2018in\u2019 and \u2018on\u2019 when talking about different modes of transportation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In English, we say we&#8217;re &#8216;in a car&#8217; but &#8216;on a bus&#8217; and &#8216;on a train.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be confusing for language learners to know which to use or the reasoning for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A quick tip is to consider whether you can stand in the vehicle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since you cannot stand in a car, truck or van, we use \u2018in.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a plane, bus or train, you are able to stand, so use the preposition \u2018on.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is it a people mover?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to determine which preposition to use is to think about vehicles as &#8216;people movers.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a vehicle is meant to transport large amounts of people we say we&#8217;re &#8216;on&#8217; it because we&#8217;re on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Examples<\/strong><\/p><p>I&#8217;m on a cruise ship.<\/p><p>She&#8217;s on the bus.<\/p><p>They&#8217;re on a train. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following roleplay highlights the prepositions shared in today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will provide an idea of how these are used in a conversation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Aubrey are making plans to meet for a coffee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> When are you free? What\u2019s on your schedule for today? <\/p><p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> I can go at 10. Should we try a new coffee shop? <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>Yes, let\u2019s meet at Mean Bean. I\u2019m at my house now, in my office. But I could be there by 10. <\/p><p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>Awesome!
