{"id":67150,"date":"2022-12-30T13:46:09","date_gmt":"2022-12-30T13:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/?p=67150"},"modified":"2022-12-31T05:53:47","modified_gmt":"2022-12-31T05:53:47","slug":"jenna-from-roses-for-every-body","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/jenna-from-roses-for-every-body\/","title":{"rendered":"AEE 1913: Fight Fatphobia with Jenna from Roses For Every Body"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Do you have fatphobia? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you find yourself attaching a moral judgment to the word &#8216;fat?&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the U.S., a negative stigma often surrounds the word &#8216;fat,&#8217; and many individuals have a prejudice against those who are plus size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s episode welcomes a guest from the Roses for Every Body campaign, Jenna. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We discuss fatphobia and how it is rooted in anti-blackness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also share the vocabulary we should use to describe body weight and remove the stigma. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen in and find out how you can be part of the solution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"1913 - Fight Fatphobia with Jenna from Roses For Every Body\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nmHmr1BKx2A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fatphobia <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Jenna is a member of the campaign \u2018Roses for Every Body.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a campaign to demand the show \u201cThe Bachelor\u201d cast plus-size individuals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s been on for 20 years and they have had over 1,142 people on the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, only two plus-size cast members have been cast, and both went home during the first episode of the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rosesforeverybody\/?hl=en\">The \u2018Roses for Every Body\u2019 movement<\/a> seeks positive representation of fat people on television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of their goals is to increase body diversity in TV and film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Weight vocabulary <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The language around fat is often used with a negative connotation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fatphobia describes the negative attitudes and stereotypes surrounding and attached to larger bodies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many, this is an uncomfortable topic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s episode, we talk about the language we should use and how to be part of the change around this stigma. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign \u2018Roses for Every Body\u2019 has been working to remove this stigma and spread the message of body positivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/impressive-english-grammar\/\">The vocabulary we use<\/a> is an extremely important part of making change happen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use the word \u2018fat\u2019 <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of the word \u2018fat\u2019 has such a pushback in our society and many avoid using it to describe bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This campaign seeks to liberate minds regarding the use of this word. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Fat&#8217; is a neutral word. It should not have a negative connotation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why should we talk about and think about the word \u2018fat\u2019? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In previous centuries, it was desirable to be fat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Renaissance, being fat was a sign of wealth and prosperity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Aubrey&#8217;s favorite artist, Peter Paul Rubens, depicted women in his paintings as round, plump and fat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These paintings highlight that all bodies are beautiful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rooted in anti-blackness<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Jenna points out that the negativity around fatness was birthed from anti-blackness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can read more about this in the book <a href=\"https:\/\/csw.ucla.edu\/2020\/11\/23\/fearing-the-black-body-the-racial-origins-of-fat-phobia-by-sabrina-strings-nyu-press-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u2018Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia by Sabrina Strings\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Society started shifting thoughts regarding fatness when food became more available to everyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fat is an adjective to describe something bigger or heavier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has often been related to health because we have the idea that weight is a factor in determining whether you are healthy or not. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jenna shares that we should revisit these assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She points out that the BMI was created to exclude some from receiving health insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>BMI<\/strong>: Body Mass Index<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Be part of the solution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How can you get involved?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jenna shares three ways you can be part of the solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These tips will help you deconstruct and consider the way we use the word fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must each start with working on ourselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#1: Unpack why you think fat is a bad thing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Try and get different inputs in your life to better understand being fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can start to follow fat influencers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1365-the-health-battle-from-coast-to-coast-in-the-us\/\">be wary of diet culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jenna\u2019s recommended creators on Instagram are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/fiercefatfemme\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@fiercefatfemme<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/fatfabfeminist\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@fatfabfeminist<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help diversify your feed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to fighting for the rights of every race, ethnicity or sexual orientation, it&#8217;s important to educate yourself on the issues and prejudices that individuals face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#2: Hold others accountable<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you hear people using the word &#8216;fat&#8217; negatively, you can call them out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If someone says one of the following, let them know their language is hurtful and damaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I look terrible in this. I&#8217;m so fat!<\/p><p>I need to go on a diet.
