I\u2019m just trying to enjoy happy hour! <\/p><p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Sorry. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scenario #2: <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>Did you have fun at the party? <\/p><p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Uh, it was ok. <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>What\u2019s wrong? <\/p><p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Well it\u2019s just that Tracy spent the whole time complaining about the food and it was a total buzzkill. <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> That\u2019s annoying. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You might hear, \u201cDon\u2019t be a buzzkill\u201d or someone might be called a \u201ctotal buzzkill.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can say this to give emphasis to what you are feeling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Buzzkill in the work setting <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Is using the term &#8216;buzzkill&#8217; appropriate for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1888-be-concise-confident-and-clear-in-business-english\/\">both formal and informal settings<\/a>? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In business English, we would not recommend using this, especially during job interviews or with your superiors who are very formal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make an assessment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/verbing-at-work\/\">what the culture is in your workplace<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your company is very formal, you shouldn\u2019t use it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be misunderstood and someone would take offense when you say it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are other words that are similar to the phrase &#8216;buzzkill.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Killjoy<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u201ckilljoy\u201d means the same as &#8216;buzzkill.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it is used exclusively to describe people, whereas anything or anyone can be a &#8216;buzzkill.&#8217; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Martin is such a killjoy! <\/p><p>My mom won&#8217;t let me stay out late. What a killjoy!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wet blanket<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The term &#8216;wet blanket&#8217; means that you are ruining the mood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a very visual idiom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine a fire being extinguished by covering it with a wet blanket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same way, fun can be extinguished by a person who is negative or critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not a positive thing to be called a &#8216;wet blanket.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be careful who you call this, as it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1491-say-thank-you-sassy-english\/\">can be offensive<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to the term &#8216;killjoy,&#8217; the phrase &#8216;wet blanket&#8217; is also used to refer to people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following is a roleplay using all the terms shared in this episode. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Michelle are sisters deciding what to get for their mom\u2019s birthday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Okay, so I love this necklace. <\/p><p><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Oh Lindsay it\u2019s too expensive. <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> What? Oh come on Michelle. You\u2019re being such a killjoy. Let\u2019s not worry about the price yet.<\/p><p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Wow. Lindsay it\u2019s 1,000 dollars.
