I\u2019ve been listening to you guys for two years and I\u2019m jonesing for the coming programs. But I think I\u2019m a bit puzzled now. I was listening to the app and there was a place where you said \u201cno one has three minutes to sit down with TED talks.\u201d But I know you meant that it was easy for someone to find three minutes to listen to TED talks. It\u2019s so random, but my question is, was it a mere slip of the tongue, or is there a rule behind it? Since it\u2019s kinda diverse, I believe. I appreciate it if you would make me feel better again.\u201d <\/em><\/p><cite><em>Mustani<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Without the context, many would say double negatives are not correct grammar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey share with you a breakdown of how to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>High-level grammar <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Native English speakers use double negatives to emphasize something or make a point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to remember that intonation is everything when doing this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t use the right intonation, people may misunderstand you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We would want to use double negatives with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1384-the-state-of-stative-verbs-dont-get-flagged-as-a-lower-level-speaker\/\">stative verbs<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stative verbs are used to express feelings, thoughts, and opinions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of these are: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cLike\u2026\u201d <\/li><li>\u201cI think\u2026\u201d <\/li><li>\u201cAs I understand\u2026\u201d <\/li><li>\u201cI love\u2026\u201d <\/li><li>\u201cI feel\u2026\u201d <\/li><li>\u201cThat seems\u2026\u201d <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In a sentence, you can say <strong>\u201cNo one doesn&#8217;t like a sunny day!\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be said when you\u2019re outside and it&#8217;s a good day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can emphasize that the day is really good and you can go out and enjoy yourself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to use double negatives is with &#8216;have.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An example of this is: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cNo one doesn\u2019t have time for a few minutes of meditation.\u201d <\/li><li>\u201cNo one doesn\u2019t have a few dollars for a manicure.\u201d <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey and Lindsay aren\u2019t fond of having manicures and pedicures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They find it nice but it\u2019s not for them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey is very ticklish so she doesn\u2019t like getting pedicures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t overuse double negatives<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You should not use double negatives all the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These should be reserved for when you\u2019re trying to put emphasis on something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use it with either the verb &#8216;have&#8217; or with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1335-english-grammar-tips-stative-verbs-conversation\/\">stative verb<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we use it with &#8216;have,&#8217; it&#8217;s exclusively to talk about time or money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We wouldn&#8217;t say the following sentences to emphasize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cNo one doesn\u2019t like me.\u201d <\/li><li>\u201cNo one doesn\u2019t have a car.\u201d <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not for business English<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the wrong context, this could cause offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, you want to avoid using it in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1888-be-concise-confident-and-clear-in-business-english\/\">business English<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing this in formal English may sound condescending. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a sample roleplay: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Lindsay: I don\u2019t want this task. <\/p><p>Aubrey: It should only take you five minutes. No one doesn\u2019t have five minutes. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you\u2019re using this in a playful way, it still sounds like you are criticizing the person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may make them feel that they are not working hard enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, you shouldn&#8217;t use it at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, use this when you\u2019re having small talk with friends or family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s okay to use double negatives in informal settings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Roleplay <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay to show how to use double negatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>I haven\u2019t showered in six days. I just don\u2019t have time. <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>Aubrey! No one doesn\u2019t have a few minutes for personal hygiene. <\/p><p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>Okay that\u2019s fair, but how do people have time to do their hair and put on makeup every day? That, I just don\u2019t have time for. <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> How long does it take? I can do it in three minutes.
