If it is rude, can you share different ways how to answer?<\/em><\/p><cite>Larry<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to contemplate the words you use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t want to be dismissive when you are in a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being rude can break the connection between you and a colleague or friend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we share four phrases that can sound rude or dismissive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll also learn alternatives you can use that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1730-dont-burn-bridges\/\">appropriate and polite<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1: <strong>As I told you <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This phrase can be rude, blunt, and very dismissive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is often used to tell someone to listen more intently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, it implies that the speaker is frustrated because they have to repeat themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to be careful when using this phrase because it sounds so critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The person you are speaking to may feel stupid or dismissed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What you can say instead of this is: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cAs previously mentioned\u2026\u201d <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This means the same thing but is not as direct. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It sounds much more respectful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1877-how-multiple-english-verb-tenses-spice-up-a-story\/\">the passive voice<\/a>, whereas \u2018as I told you&#8217; is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The passive voice is much less direct. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Example: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> Sorry to interrupt your presentation, but I have another question. <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> As previously mentioned, we will take questions at the end after the presentation. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2: <strong>That\u2019s nonsense <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is similar to \u2018that doesn\u2019t make any sense.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be interpreted as very rude and blunt as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saying this is dismissing the opinion of the person you&#8217;re speaking to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also shows that you strongly disagree and you feel justified in dismissing their opinion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are good alternatives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cI see where you\u2019re coming from, but I disagree. Have you considered\u2026\u201d<\/strong> <\/p><p><strong>\u201cInteresting. I have to disagree. Have you considered\u2026\u201d<\/strong> <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It is vital to remain respectful and, if possible, acknowledge that you understand their side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1775-the-3-step-system-to-disagree-in-business-english\/\">if you disagree vehemently<\/a>, you can still acknowledge their point of view. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must realize that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, whether or not we agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you disagree passionately with someone or you can\u2019t find common ground, you can say<strong>, &#8220;Let\u2019s agree to disagree.&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Example: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>So to summarize, I think the Earth is flat <\/p><p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>Interesting. I disagree. Have you considered how from a distance the tops of tall objects like mountains are visible well before their base? This seems to be evidence of Earth\u2019s curvature. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3: <strong>That\u2019s stupid <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a very unkind response. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is outright disrespectful and insulting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite strongly disagreeing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1217-dont-dwell-on-it-how-to-respond-appropriately-when-someone-is-stressed-in-english\/\">don\u2019t resort to being dismissive<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The alternative to this is: <strong>\u201cI\u2019m not sure that\u2019s accurate. Have you considered\u2026\u201d<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Example: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> So to complete this math equation, 36 x 6 is 360. <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I\u2019m not sure that\u2019s accurate. Let\u2019s check it on a calculator. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#4: <strong>That\u2019s silly<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is often said to someone who is making a decision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents often use this when talking to their children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you say this phrase, you are implying a person is childish, foolish, or frivolous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Frivolous<\/strong>: not taking things seriously<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a much more respectful way to say someone is making a bad decision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can instead say, <strong>\u201cI don\u2019t know if that\u2019s wise. Have you considered the possible outcomes?\u201d<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Example: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> My friends are saying I should invest in Bitcoin. <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Oh. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s wise. I think it\u2019s on a 3 month low.
