Good luck!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her neighbor then was concerned and said \u201cOh no! Does it look droopy? I just bought it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey had misunderstood because she assumed the plant was old and she didn\u2019t know it was new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was worried she might have offended her neighbor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She immediately called her up and explained the misunderstanding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can happen to anyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey says that even native English speakers get confused. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay found Aubrey\u2019s story very interesting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As she was telling the story, she was using several different verb tenses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an advanced skill that you want to learn so you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/english-grammar-for-intonation\/\">sound more native and natural<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spice up your story <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To be able to better explain how you can use multiple tenses in your story to spice it up, Lindsay and Aubrey will break down the story that Aubrey told. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>\u201cI got my wires crossed last night&#8230;\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this sentence, Aubrey used the past tense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was setting the scene and wanted to let you know that it happened in the past. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also hooks you with an interesting idiom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was discussed in a previous episode on how to start your story with a hook. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can check out <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1364-grammar-3-tell-a-story-and-hook-your-audience-with-past-progressive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AEE 1364: Grammar Part 3: Tell a Story and Hook your Audience with Past Progressive <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to make sure the people you\u2019re talking to are listening to the story you\u2019re sharing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>\u201cShe is worried it won\u2019t survive\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this portion of the story, Aubrey moved to a passive voice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not the only option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay says that she would usually say \u201cShe was worried it wouldn\u2019t survive.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference is, you usually use the passive voice if the incident happened very recently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if it happened further in the past, you can use the way Lindsay says it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>\u201cIt does look a little droopy.
