How to Get Engaged in American Culture <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1139-what-to-call-your-partner-in-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AEE 1139: What to Call Your Partner in English <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Talk about love <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is fun to speculate and wonder if a person is \u2018the one\u2019 for your friend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Michelle share expressions you can use to talk about exciting blossoming relationships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blossoming: growing or blooming<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This verb is commonly used to describe a relationship that is at an early stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is perfect for describing a wonderful partnership that has the potential to be a life-long relationship<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#1: This is it <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You will often hear that a relationship is called \u2018it.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This refers to that one person that is meant for you or your friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will likely be a permanent relationship or a spouse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can hear this often in music, romantic-comedy movies, novels, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><strong>Example: <\/strong>&#8220;They&#8217;ve been dating for a year. I think this is it!&#8221; <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#2: The one <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This phrase is also often heard in movies to describe people who are well-suited for each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018The one\u2019 describes an ideal long-term partner for a person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><strong>Example:<\/strong> &#8220;They are perfect. She&#8217;s definitely the one.&#8221; <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#3: Wind up\/end up together <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This expression means that it&#8217;s the end of one&#8217;s single life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of that period of time, we say you &#8216;end up&#8217; with a person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><strong>Example:<\/strong> &#8220;Do you think they will wind up together? I think it&#8217;s pretty obvious!&#8221; <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#4: Make things\/it official <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is used to talk about getting engaged or married. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also be used to move to the next level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This might mean going from dating to moving in together or putting a label on a relationship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><strong>Example:<\/strong> &#8220;I think they will make it official once he graduates.&#8221; <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#5: Getting serious <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Getting serious\u2019 means to exclusively focus on one relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is synonymous with saying that you are in a \u2018serious relationship.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also mean that your relationship has changed from seeing each other casually to deciding that you will officially be with each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><strong>Example: <\/strong>&#8220;Wow things are getting serious. They are inseparable!&#8221; <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dating and serious relationships <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay asks Michelle what her style was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-685-weather-dating-common-find-today\/\">when she was dating<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She wanted to know if Michelle gradually eased into a serious relationship or did she get serious quickly once she liked someone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle shares that with her husband it was very gradual at first because she was busy with school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She lived far from her husband so the distance didn\u2019t allow them to see each other often. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, they made it official and started their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1275-who-do-you-get-along-with-how-to-describe-relationships-in-english\/\">more serious relationship<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay relates to that and she agrees that serious relationships often develop over time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals usually start out by getting to know each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They eventually realize they see the person as someone they can spend the rest of their life with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Linday and Michelle share a roleplay to demonstrate how you can use these expressions in a conversation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay and Michelle talk about their friends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I have never seen him so happy! <\/p><p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> You think this could be it? <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I do!
