I am Kenan Okiyawa, originally from Japan and currently studying in the U.S. <\/em><\/p><p><em>My American friends often use the adjective salty, not as a description of taste but as another meaning. <\/em><\/p><p><em>I looked it up in the urban dictionary, but it was explained in so many ways that I got confused. <\/em><\/p><p><em>Can you teach me how to naturally use the term salty? <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New English slang words <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenan&#8217;s question is great because the slang word being asked about is new and current. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Language is evolving and new English slang is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/non-textbook-english-phrases\/\">not taught in textbooks<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning this slang can help you connect in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natives use this slang all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It makes your speech less formal and closer to the way natives speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#1: Salty<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two ways &#8216;salty&#8217; is used as slang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first is to be annoyed or irritated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey shares that instead of saying &#8216;he\u2019s annoyed,&#8217; you can say &#8216;he\u2019s salty.&#8217; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a good, playful way to mention someone is upset without being too confrontational. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also a nice way to diffuse a difficult situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second meaning is impatient and hasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is about a person&#8217;s character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To illustrate, Lindsay shares a story about a woman in a Boston sandwich shop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The woman took their order and was very blunt and hasty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She had a very strong personality and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1817-5-steps-to-resolve-conflict-as-a-leader-at-work-with-jerry-fu\/\">blunt and straightforward<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can say she is salty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2: <strong>Bougie<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This means something shows wealth or is fancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is from the French word bourgeoisie, which is what the upper class is called. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>My mom is going wine tasting with her bougie friends. <\/p><p>Oh! I love your bougie pajamas! <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#3: Tea\/spilling tea<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This slang term means to share gossip or a dramatic story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is similar to the outdated expression &#8216;spill the beans.&#8217; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay shares that she thought it was &#8216;spill the T,&#8217; and she figured the &#8216;T&#8217; stood for a word starting with the letter T.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey clarifies that it is spelled &#8216;tea&#8217; and can be remembered by thinking of spilling a cup of tea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>You won\u2019t believe what I found out. I\u2019ve got the tea. <\/p><p>Spill the tea! I want to know what happened to your date. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ghosting\/ghosted<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This term means to stop communicating with someone, usually on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/hidden-job-market-in-the-us-with-anish-majumdar\/\">social media<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is often used in the dating world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I never texted him back.
