Don&#039;t get Stumped by Prepositions of Time\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rCjRem-AVB0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>English prepositions of time <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay asks Aubrey if she is good at getting to places on time or if is she usually late. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey says she is a stickler for being on time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Stickler<\/strong>: a person who is very strict about a certain quality or behavior <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey makes sure she is prompt and does not keep others waiting when she commits to a meeting or schedule. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It bothers her when others are late, so she makes an effort to be on time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay mentions that she has friends who are notoriously late. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She finds that annoying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She shares as well that is part of American culture to be on time all the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It shows you respect others&#8217; time and you value them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s episode is inspired by a listener question. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She asked about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/prepositions-do-it-by-yourself-versus-do-it-yourself\/\">proper use of the prepositions<\/a> in, on and at. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Listener question<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>Dear Lindsay, Michelle, Jessica and Aubrey, <\/em><\/p><p><em>Love your energetic podcast so much. I\u2019m Power Girl from Taiwan. I\u2019ve been an All Ears English fan for two years and I never find other English teaching podcasts so addictive as yours. I had difficulty with a teacher with a grammar question I answered. The sentence was \u201cThe person will arrive ____ first week of March.\u201d I used the preposition \u201cin\u201d and my instructor said I should use \u201con.\u201d The reason for this is because the person will be arriving on a certain week. I tried and Google it and I found some native English speakers using \u201cin\u201d and it is now making me more confused. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">English<strong> prepositions can be confusing!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey understands it can be very frustrating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/english-preposition-made-common\/\">when you don\u2019t know which preposition to use<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are, however, very important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the incorrect preposition makes the grammar incorrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also makes a speaker stand out as a language learner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t stress about this, as it&#8217;s more important to make a connection!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you know the overarching rules, you&#8217;ll know which one to use!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Answering today&#8217;s question<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>overarching rule<\/strong>: for larger time periods, use the preposition \u201cin.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is used for the largest amounts of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also adds that the instructor might get confused as well because he or she may not be a native English speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They might also be from Britain or New Zealand where they may use prepositions differently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay agrees with this and mentioned that she recently did a podcast with Pete Smissen which highlighted differences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pete greeted her with, \u201cHow are you going?\u201d and she responded, \u201cI\u2019m going well!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can watch the episode at this link: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nqCiYrtpDJg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AEE 1605: 3 Tips for Life in Australia with Pete Smissen from the Aussie English Podcast<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grammar rules are a good foundation for improving your English. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you don\u2019t have to just stick to that if the general people around you use it differently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You want to blend in and it\u2019s possible that with different ways to use English as a local. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to Use In, On and At <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three English prepositions to use when referring to time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In<\/li><li>On<\/li><li>At<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Aubrey share the difference between all three and how to use them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#1: In <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This preposition is used to show the largest time or place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be broad time events or the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><em>Example: <\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><em>\u201cIn June\u2026\u201d <\/em><\/p><p><em>\u201cIn Summer\u2026\u201d <\/em><\/p><p><em>\u201cIn the Dark Ages\u2026\u201d <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2: On<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;On&#8217; is used to refer to much more specific dates and times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><em>Example:<\/em><\/strong> <\/p><p><em>\u201cOn Saturday\u2026\u201d <\/em><\/p><p><em>\u201cOn March 6\u2026\u201d <\/em><\/p><p><em>\u201cOn my birthday\u2026\u201d <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#3: At<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is usually used for smaller increments of time or place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can be more precise with it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><em>Example: <\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><em>\u201cAt 2:00\u2026\u201d <\/em><\/p><p><em>\u201cAt bedtime\u2026\u201d <\/em><\/p><p><em>\u201cAt sunrise\u2026\u201d <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay to show how you can use these prepositions in a conversation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, Lindsay is asking Aubrey about attending a mutual friend\u2019s birthday party. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Are you going to Mark\u2019s party? <\/p><p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> Oh I forgot about it. When is it? <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> It\u2019s on Saturday at 7:00 pm. <\/p><p><strong>Aubrey: <\/strong>Oh no! That\u2019s on July 5th. I made plans to do a nearby hike at sunset. <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Maybe you can do both. What time is sunset? <\/p><p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> It sets earlier in summer, right? I think it sets at 6:00 pm.
