Michelle asks Lindsay if she ever had to talk to someone about some pretty serious feedback as a manager. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also asks if Lindsay was uncomfortable giving the feedback. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay says she has been fortunate to not have encountered any situation where she had to give negative feedback as a manager. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She thinks it will happen someday but she has been lucky so far. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay asks the same question to Michelle. Michelle shares that she hasn\u2019t experienced it as a manager but she has encountered it as a teacher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a teacher, you have to give feedback. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She gives an example about students who are often late. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She would have to reprimand them and let them know it\u2019s disrespectful to be tardy all the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the question that inspired today\u2019s episode: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Hello. My name is Ateka. I\u2019m an English teacher from Japan. I used to work for AEON just like you. \ud83d\ude0a I\u2019m a huge fan of AEE. Listening to your voices makes me happy every day. Thank you for your hard work! I have a question. I\u2019ll start working at an international school in two months. I\u2019m going to take a managerial position, and one of my tasks will be to support the teachers who are from many different countries. In the job interview with the principal, I heard that some teachers are tardy and late to class once in a while. When that happens, I as a manager will have to talk to them and correct their behaviours. Up until today, I have only been teaching English, and I\u2019ve never had to deal with this kind of situation. So, I don\u2019t know how to address this problem with my colleagues. How can I talk to them about problems like this and still be on good terms with them? Will you please help me? I\u2019d really appreciate it if you do. It is a good thing that she is anticipating future situations and is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1815-3-step-formula-to-convey-quiet-confidence-in-english\/\">focused on maintaining good relations<\/a> after giving negative feedback. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are starting in a great place if you act with care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Maintaining Relationships After Giving Feedback <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1761-3-tips-for-international-business-and-travel-with-heather-markel\/\">working in an international business<\/a>, there are a lot of things you have to consider when you are communicating as a manager. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First is culture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Culture plays an important part in making sure you get the right message across when you are communicating at work. There are cultures where it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1367-how-to-be-indirectly-direct-in-english\/\">may be hard to give direct feedback<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, when delivering the feedback, you have to start by showing interest in the person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can start the conversation by asking about their hobbies, families or other interests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This helps with starting a good core relationship with your colleague as you give feedback. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Third, you have to remain calm. You don\u2019t need to yell, especially if you are giving feedback while you&#8217;re frustrated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good manager knows how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1775-the-3-step-system-to-disagree-in-business-english\/\">communicate properly and professionally<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourth thing to remember is if you are giving bad feedback, it helps to show you empathize. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are their leader and showing that you have gone through the same thing or you can relate to their experience makes it easier for them to understand your feedback. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, you have to remember that as a manager, you are doing your best to realign your team members so you can be efficient and productive together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After giving the feedback, you have to seek out solutions together and set out goals to make sure what you discussed will be fruitful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Phrases to Use to Give Feedback <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some phrases you can use that will help in giving feedback: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>When opening up a conversation, here is what you can say: <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cHi I wanted to chat with you about something.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>When you want to bring up a topic, this is what you can use: <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI\u2019ve noticed you\u2019ve been late a few times\u2026\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Here is a phrase that you can use to show you are empathizing with your colleague: <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI wanted to check in and see if everything is okay.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To start initiating the discussion to find solutions, you can say: <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI was wondering if you needed any help navigating your way to work, or if I can help with timing in any way.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay and Michelle have given several tips on how you can give feedback as a manager, here is a quick roleplay incorporating all those tips. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay is talking to Michelle about being late. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Hey Michelle how\u2019s it going? <\/p><p><strong>Michelle:<\/strong> Good thanks! <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay<\/strong>: I wanted to chat with you about something\u2026 <\/p><p><strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Okay\u2026 <\/p><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> I\u2019ve noticed you\u2019ve been late a few times.
