{"id":61973,"date":"2022-03-29T17:10:37","date_gmt":"2022-03-29T17:10:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/?p=61973"},"modified":"2022-03-29T17:10:38","modified_gmt":"2022-03-29T17:10:38","slug":"aee-1755-3-questions-about-childhood-to-build-deep-work-relationships-in-english","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1755-3-questions-about-childhood-to-build-deep-work-relationships-in-english\/","title":{"rendered":"AEE 1755: 3 Questions about Childhood to Build Deep Work Relationships in English"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Asking about childhood memories or traditions is one of the best ways to get to that deeper level with colleagues in English. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s episode, Aubrey and Lindsay share three questions you can ask to jump-start a conversation and build that connection for better work relationships and a better social life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"3 Questions about Childhood to Build Deep Work Relationships - All Ears English Podcast 1755\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZM8vTlkEJ-E?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-childhood-memories\"><strong>Childhood Memories <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay asks Aubrey if she has had conversations lately with friends or even the All Ears English team members about childhood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey says that yes, she has them all of the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She usually has conversations about her childhood with Jessica when they are chatting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They would be discussing a certain topic and it then reminds them of something in their childhood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have such a fun conversation talking about things they did when they were young and they learn so much about each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay is happy to know this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She shares that talking about childhood memories creates that connection with another person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This episode is inspired by a previous episode where Aubrey shared about ice fishing with her dad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1744-four-ways-to-ask-your-work-colleague-about-their-interests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">All Ears English Episode 1744: Four Ways to Ask Your<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1744-four-ways-to-ask-your-work-colleague-about-their-interests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Work Colleague About Their Interests. <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey mentions that asking about personal stuff like this is a skill that they want to teach you and start getting deeper conversations with others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In America, it is very common to get to know your colleague and ask about personal stories like this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You wouldn\u2019t ask this when you first meet the person but as you try and build that connection with them, talking about common things you did when you were younger is a good conversation starter to bring your relationship to a deeper level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Three Questions to Start The Conversation About Childhood Memories <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are three questions that Lindsay and Aubrey share with you to help you start a conversation with your colleague and talk about childhood memories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>What is something you did when you were young that strengthened your relationship with your family? <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a very specific question that shows your intention to get to know the person you\u2019re talking to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you ask something very general like, \u201cWhat was your childhood like?\u201d, that is very surface level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you ask them something very specific like this, they are asked to think deeper and share a meaningful answer that will make it easier for you to connect with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay\u2019s answer to this question is skiing. When she was younger, her mom and dad enrolled her and her brother in ski lessons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sundays, they would go together as a family and ski all day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was before cell phones and Lindsay enjoyed being in the mountains and bonding with each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey shares that for her, what strengthened her ties with her family was going camping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her best camping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1301-are-you-nostalgic-3-ways-to-save-memories-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">memories<\/a> were sitting around the campfire, making smores, sharing stories, and many more activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>What about your childhood shaped your character? <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be a very theoretical question. If you ask someone this, they might not be able to answer right away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They may say that they haven\u2019t really thought about this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What you can do is pick up a good observation about the person and ask them how they became the way that they are. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you can ask \u201cWhere did you get your amazing work ethic?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey says that this is a good way to mention a compliment like \u201cYou\u2019re a great leader. How\u2019d you learn that?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They would be happy to share what inspired them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Did your family have any traditions or rituals that had a big impact on you? <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also a follow-up question after you get an answer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They may just answer you directly and not give more details. If they are not chatty, this is the perfect time for a follow-up question. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can say \u201cThat\u2019s amazing. What did it mean to you?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aubrey\u2019s parents would take her and her siblings on individual dates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She had a few siblings and having one-on-one time with her parents felt really special. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay had a tradition with her family where they would put the lights up before Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her mom doesn\u2019t like anything very gaudy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gaudy means something is too much and does not look tasteful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindsay, her dad, and her brother would put up so many different colored lights all over the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her mom would not be happy about it but she had so much fun doing that to tease her and have a bonding moment with her dad and brother. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roleplay <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a quick roleplay by Lindsay and Aubrey, using all three questions and sample answers for you to be able to understand fully how to use them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this roleplay, Lindsay and Aubrey are co-workers and they are on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1638-time-crunches-and-business-lunches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lunch break. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have known each other for a while but they haven\u2019t had any deep conversations yet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> I\u2019m excited for this chance to get to know you better. We are both always so busy. We haven\u2019t had the chance to chat much. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>I know, right? It\u2019s been fun to get to know you but I\u2019d love to know more about what makes you tick. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> Same. I know you said you grew up in Ohio, what was that like? Was it a small town? <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Yeah, a tiny farming town. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> What was your childhood like? <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>L<\/strong>i<strong>ndsay:<\/strong> Oh you know, just average. Nothing special. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> Did your family have any traditions or rituals that had a big impact on you? <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Yeah, actually we did. Every year we would hike to a waterfall and have a picnic and I really look forward to it. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Aubrey:<\/strong> Oh! That\u2019s amazing! What did it mean to you to know your parents wanted to create that special time together? <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Lindsay:<\/strong> Well it definitely made me feel special and loved. It also was a great way for them to pass their appreciation for the beauty of nature on to me. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In this roleplay, notice that Aubrey started with what not to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She started with a question that was not very specific. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why Lindsay also answered something short and only on the surface level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Aubrey switched it up and asked about something deeper, it encouraged Lindsay to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1744-four-ways-to-ask-your-work-colleague-about-their-interests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">share something more about her childhood.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also a bonus expression used in the roleplay. The bonus phrase is \u201cwhat makes you tick.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means to learn how someone thinks or why they are the way they are. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Takeaway <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We are human beings and not robots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even at work, we need to build that connection with our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1706-simplify-your-words-to-succeed-at-work-in-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> colleagues <\/a>and learn about each other which can eventually help you guys work better together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is fun to talk about our childhood because it brings in nostalgia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone can join in on the topic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will be happy to share memories that they are fond of and you may find similarities with one another which can be an opportunity for you to bond. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is your best childhood memory? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How does that make you feel thinking of that?
