practice these in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/ielts-energy-771-how-one-facebook-group-helped-zarina-get-an-ielts-7-5\/\">our Facebook group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of these sentences contained a minor error that greatly changed the meaning.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019m going to nosh on a grub.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This means you\u2019re going to eat a worm.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Countable and uncountable nouns<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\">For some nouns, the meaning changes if it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1236-dont-make-these-english-mistakes-with-countable-and-uncountable-nouns\/\">uncountable or countable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This happens most often with nouns used as slang.<\/p>\n<p>A countable noun is something you can count.<\/p>\n<p>It is usually preceded by an article.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an apple<\/li>\n<li>a tree<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Uncountable nouns are things that cannot be counted.<\/p>\n<p>They need no article.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>water<\/li>\n<li>air<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>#1 Grub vs. a grub<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As an uncountable noun, grub is slang that means \u2018food.\u2019<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anybody want some grub?<\/li>\n<li>This grub is delicious!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If it is countable, we add an article to make it \u2018a grub\u2019 or \u2018the grubs.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>These are the larva of a beetle.<\/p>\n<p>They look like fat, juicy worms.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I found a bunch of grubs under the log.<\/li>\n<li>I can\u2019t believe he ate that grub!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>#2: Bomb vs. a bomb<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We use the word \u2018bomb\u2019 to mean something is cool or awesome.<\/p>\n<p>It is uncountable, and therefore does not have an article.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>That party was bomb!<\/li>\n<li>This pizza is bomb.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you had an article to this, it becomes an explosive device.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The office was evacuated because a bomb was in the building.<\/li>\n<li>The bomb was detonated at 5 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" She always wears the latest fashions.<\/li>\n<li>This song is hip. I hear it on the radio every day!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also use \u2018hip to\u2019 when referring to awareness about somethimg.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He\u2019s hip to all the drama between his friends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a countable noun, it describes part of the body.<\/p>\n<p>A hip describes two different body parts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>flesh between your waist and upper leg<\/li>\n<li>the bones that make up the joints between the waist and leg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>#4: Coin vs a coin<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u2018Coin\u2019 is slang for money.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is going to cost a lot of coin.<\/li>\n<li>How much coin do you have in the bank?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a countable noun, it is related but has a different meaning.<\/p>\n<p>A coin is a metal piece of money.<\/p>\n<p>Each country\u2019s money system has different coins.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., we have pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters.<\/p>\n<p>We also have half dollars, sometimes called 50 cent pieces, but they are not widely circulated.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, we have dollar coins but they also are fairly rare.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>#5: Chill vs. a chill<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We tell someone to \u2018chill\u2019 when they should relax or calm down.<\/p>\n<p>We also use it as slang to describe something as relaxed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The party was pretty chill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a countable noun, we add an article and the meaning changes.<\/p>\n<p>It then means one of two things: a cold feeling or a creepy, scary feeling.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I feel a chill in here.
