{"id":52832,"date":"2015-08-25T15:04:40","date_gmt":"2015-08-25T15:04:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/aee\/how-to-be-confident-on-the-ielts-listening-test\/"},"modified":"2021-12-03T15:31:31","modified_gmt":"2021-12-03T15:31:31","slug":"how-to-be-confident-on-the-ielts-listening-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/how-to-be-confident-on-the-ielts-listening-test\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Be Confident on the IELTS Listening Test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you want to know how to be confident on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/ielts-listening-test\/\">IELTS Listening Test<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Here is the answer: Prepare!<\/p>\n<p>If you ask anyone who gets that magic score of a 7 or higher on the listening test, they will tell you that they practiced listening.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t just practice the listening exam, however.<\/p>\n<p>Students who understand what they hear on the exam worked hard to strengthen their overall listening ability as well, outside of textbooks and test practice.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, here are five activities to give you confidence on the listening exam.<\/p>\n<p>All they require are a computer or smartphone, paper and something to write with.<\/p>\n<p>Ready to get started?<\/p>\n<p>Check out these resources below!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>#1) Listen to a podcast, an IELTS listening practice test, or any recording of spoken English with an audio script.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Try to write out what you hear- word for word.<\/p>\n<p>You can pause it anytime to write.<\/p>\n<p>Compare your notes with the audio script.<\/p>\n<p>Notice any words that you didn\u2019t understand, and listen to that part again.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/\">http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/<\/a> (Voice of America<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/elllo.org\/\">http:\/\/elllo.org\/<\/a> (EnglishListening Lesson Library Online)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dictationsonline.com\/\">http:\/\/www.dictationsonline.com\/<\/a> (Online Dictations)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.esl-lab.com\/\">http:\/\/www.esl-lab.com\/<\/a> (Randall\u2019s Cyber Listening Lab)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>#2) Close your eyes and listen to a podcast, an IELTS Listening practice test, or any recording of spoken English with an audio script.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Listen again and follow along in the audio script.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>#3) Choose a video that has subtitles or closed captioning (look for a button or icon with CC on it to turn on the closed captioning subtitles). Watch it with the subtitles so you can read and listen at the same time.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Watch the same video again with NO subtitles\/closed captioning.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hulu.com\/\">http:\/\/www.hulu.com\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.netflix.com\/browse\">http:\/\/www.netflix.com\/browse<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>#4) Choose a song you like. Read the lyrics online, and sing along.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Try these websites for some great ideas to get started.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.azlyrics.com\/\">http:\/\/www.azlyrics.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.letssingit.com\/\">Let Sing It<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>#5) Choose a song you like. Try and listen and write the lyrics as you hear them. You can pause the song at anytime to write.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Compare your notes with the lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>Listen to the song again and sing along.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What else should you do?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Besides these activities, you should still watch movies and TV shows whenever you like, without turning it into a listening practice activity.<\/p>\n<p>Just choose something you are interested in, watch, and enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>Also, when you are doing <a href=\"\/ielts\/ielts-energy-prepare-test-conditions-ielts\/\">IELTS test practice<\/a>, do the listening practice test a couple of times.<\/p>\n<p>After you do the test the first time, circle the answer you got incorrect.<\/p>\n<p>Then, check the audio script, or tape script, and find the answer that you missed.<\/p>\n<p>Next, you can listen to the whole thing one more time and follow along with the answers, listening for the correct ones.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you can listen for the last time, and follow along with the audio script.<\/p>\n<p>This will help you get used to the speed at which they speak and the <a href=\"\/ielts\/ielts-english-accents\/\">different accents that are used on the IELTS <\/a>exam.<\/p>\n<p>Most practice exams come with an audio script, so use it!<\/p>\n<p>On test day, just remember to follow the directions.<\/p>\n<p>The IELTS exam is very well designed, so just listen to what the person on the CD tells you to do, and do it.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when she\/he tells you to look at the questions 1 to 5, only look at those questions.<\/p>\n<p>When the person tells you to check your answers for a section, check those answers.<\/p>\n<p>Do not go ahead to the next section.<\/p>\n<p>Try to work in as many of these activities as you can every day, working on improving your overall listening ability for 10 to 20 minutes a day.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not too much time- and the investment will pay off on test day!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good luck and let us know in the comments if you have any questions!<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you want to know how to be confident on the IELTS Listening Test?
