Find out today!<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-192-captivate-people-small-talk\/\">Small talk<\/a> can be a tricky topic when it comes to interacting across cultures.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">While one topic is polite and almost required in one culture it can be a huge taboo in another culture.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Today we have a special guest on the show to clear up any small talk confusion you might have.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Jennifer Kumar works as a cross-cultural trainer and coach in India.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">She works primarily with Indian professional who do business with American companies.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Key differences in small talk between India and the US:<\/strong><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<strong>Greetings:<\/strong> In the US we tend to say \u201cHi, how are you?\u201d but in India they might say \u201cDid you have your lunch?\u201d The common response is \u201cYes, I had my lunch and it was good.\u201d If you say \u201cNo I didn\u2019t have my lunch\u201d then people may get concerned and may want to offer you food. This is very different from American culture. Common mistakes that Indians might make when they answer \u201chow are you?\u201d is that they might give too much information and details when it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-66-how-not-to-respond-to-an-american-greeting-in-english\/\">more of a greeting, not a question<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\"><strong>&nbsp;Asking people where they live:<\/strong> In the US we might ask a general question, like \u201cWhere do you live?\u201d but in India they may build on this question and ask \u201cWhat street do you live on?\u201d \u201cWhat side of the street do you live on?\u201d but in the US these more specific questions would feel like an invasion of privacy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<strong>Asking about the person\u2019s relationship or marriage status:<\/strong> In India it\u2019s much more common to ask \u201cAre you married?\u201d If you ask an American this question too early they might think you are romantically interested in them. On the other hand, if this question isn\u2019t asked in India then people may become offended.
