I see native speakers using these words when they gesture with their fingers by making air quotes in a conversation. It looks really natural to me but I am not sure when and how to use them.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>-AEE Listener<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Technically:<\/strong> Use this when you are about to break something down or correct someone. You can use it if someone misuses something.\n<ul>\n<li>A: Oh Michelle I like your leather jacket.<\/li>\n<li>B: Oh thanks Lindsay. <em><strong>Technically<\/strong><\/em> it\u2019s not real leather. It\u2019s vegan leather.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Basically:&nbsp;<\/strong>Use this when you want to simplify something and you want to give someone the basic essence of the message\n<ul>\n<li>A: Michelle can you help me with these instructions? I just read this manual and I am confused.<\/li>\n<li>B: Oh Lindsay <em><strong>basically<\/strong><\/em> you need to make sure the cord is plugged in and turn on the TV. It\u2019s not that hard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s happening in the US with the word \u201cliterally\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Literally means \u201cin the strict meaning of the word\u201d but now in the US people are using it incorrectly.<\/p>\n<p>They are using \u201cliterally\u201d when they actually mean \u201cfiguratively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s being used as an intensifier.<\/p>\n<p>This happens all of the time these days.<\/p>\n<p>For example, \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe how crowded the dance floor was. There were literally thousands of people there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We might say this when there were only hundreds of people, not thousands.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We found a great article in Boston.com called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/lifestyle\/articles\/2011\/07\/19\/literally_the_most_misused_word\/\">Literally, the Most Misused Word.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the article this mistake goes back to the 1920\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The article suggested that the reason for this is the fact that we are always looking for drama and \u201cliterally\u201d creates a sense of drama.&nbsp;But when we use literally in this way it makes us sound unoriginal and not very articulate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What should you do if you are using literally incorrectly?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use other intensifiers and do it in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>Start your phrase with \u201cIt was incredible.&nbsp;There were so many people in the club!\u201d or \u201cIt was astounding!
