Here is the General Writing Task 1 Letter Question:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYou are a student at an English language school in Brighton and are living in private accommodation with other flatmates. You\u2019ve not had hot water or heating for some time. The landlord\u2019s workmen have tried to fix the problem but without success. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter state your reason for writing, describe the problems and explain how you feel, propose a solution, and risk the landlord to take action.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Problem #1)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first part that bothered our student about this question is \u201cyou have not had hot water or heating for some time.\u201d<\/p>\n

We can see why this is confusing.<\/p>\n

He wanted to know if he had to choose between hot water and heating.<\/p>\n

The correct way to deal with this question is that the person has not had hot water and also has not head heating for some time.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Problem #2)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The second part was that he didn\u2019t know what it meant to \u201crisk\u201d the landlord to take action.<\/p>\n

This is a strange way to use the word \u201crisk\u201d in American English.<\/p>\n

In American English we would say \u201cChallenge the landlord to take action.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What can you do if you don\u2019t understand a Writing question?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can\u2019t ask anyone to explain the question to you.<\/p>\n

The examiners<\/a> are not even at the center yet when you are taking the Writing test.<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t understand a question you need to think about the situation and make your best guess about what it means using your own experience.<\/p>\n

Open your brain box<\/a> and pull up what you expect to happen in the situation.<\/p>\n

Remember, so much of your success depends on your mind set when you enter the exam.<\/p>\n

If you say to yourself \u201cthis is easy\u201d then you will find it easy to figure out a tough question.<\/p>\n
