{"id":52273,"date":"2016-10-12T01:25:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-12T01:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/aee\/aee-616-can-say-no-nosy-person-american-culture\/"},"modified":"2022-06-23T06:31:45","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T06:31:45","slug":"aee-616-can-say-no-nosy-person-american-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-616-can-say-no-nosy-person-american-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"AEE 616: Can You Say No to a Nosy Person in American Culture?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today we respond to a question from a listener of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-596-direct-english-someone-nosy\/\">Episode 596. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>When is it okay to say no to a person who is asking nosy questions in American culture?<\/p>\n<p>Find out today.<\/p>\n<p>In Episode 596 we suggested some phrases that you can use when someone asks a nosy question such as \u201cHow much money do you make?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fernando, a long-time listener thought that our phrases were too direct.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Here is his question:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Well, that is an different culture trait to discuss here.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>In my culture, people (include myself) has a huge difficult to say NO.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>I understand if it is hard to believe, but say something like: \u201cI\u2019d rather not say\u201d is considerably awkward.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Usually we try to deflect, smile and stay neutral but we seldom say a NO to anybody.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>How this works in American culture?
