In this article, you\u2019ll learn the key differences between General and Academic IELTS, and what these mean for your IELTS preparation.<\/p>\n

Firstly, their purposes<\/strong> are not the same. If you are looking to immigrate, you most likely will be required to take the General Exam<\/a>. However, to attend an English-speaking university, you will have to sit the Academic test<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Make sure you know which one is required of you, and sign up for the right one<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Now, let\u2019s get into the major differences on test day.<\/p>\n

Listening<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Listening Exam is EXACTLY THE SAME for both tests.<\/p>\n

Thus, the same listening strategies are needed<\/a>. Make your test practice valid by not using headphones<\/a>, and not taking any breaks.<\/p>\n

Reading<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The General Reading Exam has easier passages. They are not all articles, either. You may see an advertisement<\/strong> in this part of the test.<\/p>\n

However, the question types are exactly the same<\/em>. Therefore, the strategies used to find the answers<\/a> are exactly the same as well.<\/p>\n

I recommend that General candidates practice with some Academic tests, then the real exam<\/strong> will seem easy<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Writing<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Task 1<\/strong> is the starkest contrast<\/strong> between the two versions. In the Academic<\/strong> Task 1, you will be asked to write about graphs<\/a>, or, rarely, maps <\/a>or nature diagrams<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As to the General<\/strong> Task 1, you will be asked to write a letter. The letter will be informal or formal<\/a>. You are given a situation, and three bullet points that must be discussed, in creative and specific detail<\/a>, in your composition.<\/p>\n
