What advice can you give me some advice me when it comes to having a successful trip on the subway? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>B: Well you should make sure you always get up and give your seat up if there is a pregnant woman or an elderly person. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A: uH HUH ANYTHING ELSE?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>B You\u2019re not supposed to go in those side doors, the emergency ones, unless you have a bike or stroller but people do when it\u2019s crowded.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So in that conversation what was the difference between \u201cshould\u201d and \u201cnot supposed to\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Should-<\/strong> a common way to give advice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Supposed to<\/strong>&#8211; usually this is more about an outside rule that was established by someone else<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Hey Lindsay and Michelle,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><strong>It&#8217;s me, Pascal again. I\u2019m looking forward to your answer.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>I wish you all the best.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>-Pascal from Switzerland<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay great questions!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What do these \u00a0words mean:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&#8220;You should&#8221;:<\/strong> This is the standard form of giving advice. Be careful how often you use it. This could sound annoying or condescending if you are giving unsolicited advice. We talked about this in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-725-rude-say-need\/\">Episode 725.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&#8220;You better&#8221;:<\/strong>\u00a0This is strong. It&#8217;s used to give strong advice or a warning unless you are saying it jokingly.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s used a lot from parent to child: \u201cYou better finish your dinner if you want dessert.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can also be used conversationally: <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A: When is your test?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B: It\u2019s tomorrow morning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A: Oh my gosh you better get started! (should be said with the right tone of voice and enthusiasm or it could sound bossy or demanding.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&#8220;You are supposed to&#8221;<\/strong>-This is used for an outside rule that is being imposed on you, \u00a0just like what we saw in the opening role play.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;You aren\u2019t supposed to park on the left side of the street on Wednesdays.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;As tenants we are supposed to mow our own lawn 3 times every summer.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>You ought to:<\/strong>\u00a0This isn\u2019t used much anymore.
