This is the same sound that you would hear in the words &#8220;bug,&#8221; &#8220;ton&#8221; or &#8220;fun.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only time you might use \u201cei\u201d is if you are trying to emphasize something and make a point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For example, you might say,\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Can I have &#8216;uh&#8217; candy?&#8221; (\/\u0259\/) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are given two candies. You say, &#8220;But I asked for &#8216;aye&#8217; candy, not two.&#8221; (\/e\u026a\/).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now we are talking about this article and when we talk about the article \u201ca\u201d in isolation we are emphasizing it so we might use \u201cei\u201d because it\u2019s easier to highlight it that way.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But again 90% of the time, use the schwa if you are just speaking normally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To give you a few more details we are going to pull a few quotes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/vivis-adventure-story-speed-dating-talking-politics-native-speakers-boston\/\">real native speakers<\/a> because that\u2019s who really knows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-150-let-go-grammar-obsession-speak-english-like-native\/\">grammar books<\/a> tell us something is a rule it really doesn\u2019t matter if you are saying something correctly but everyone else is saying it in the \u201ccasual, street\u201d way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s grab a couple of quotes from this <a href=\"https:\/\/painintheenglish.com\/case\/5014\">forum.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>&#8220;Count me in with the &#8220;\/ay\/ for emphasis only&#8221; crowd: &#8220;That&#8217;s A book, but it&#8217;s not THE book we&#8217;re supposed to read.&#8221; If I heard someone saying &#8220;I saw \/ay\/ student reading \/ay\/ book&#8221; without emphasizing the articles, I&#8217;d assume that he was either a foreigner or an eccentric.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s interesting this same rule applies to the article \u201cthe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you want to emphasize something you say \u201cthe\u201d like \u201cthee\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Takeaway:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you know that \u201ca\u201d can be pronounced in two different ways and you know why, try to listen for these differences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay attention when someonoe is trying to emphasize something or make an idea stand out because that\u2019s when they\u2019ll use \u201cei\u201d or \u201cthee\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Once you hear it and get comfortable starting to use these variations\u00a0to sound more interesting it\u2019s all about getting more rythm and personality in your voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s what you guys are ready for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Also if you hear different uses where the speaker is trying to emphasize then post your examples in the comments section below this article.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What questions do you have?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Let us know in the comments section below.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In English do we always pronounce the article &#8220;a&#8221; in the same way?
