So today we’ll show you the different ways to pronounce the article “a.” Let’s start with a question from our listener:<\/p>\n

My name is Freddy (from Venezuela) I’ve been listening to your podcast for a long time and I am a huge fan!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I have a question for you. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Are there different pronunciations for the indefinite article “a”?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I was listening to president Donald Trump and I realized he was pronouncing “ei” instead of the shwa sound.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Hope you can help me with this mess. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Our answer:<\/strong><\/p>\n

90% of the time you use \u201cuh” with the schwa sound. This is the same sound that you would hear in the words “bug,” “ton” or “fun.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The only time you might use \u201cei\u201d is if you are trying to emphasize something and make a point.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, you might say,\u00a0“Can I have ‘uh’ candy?” (\/\u0259\/) <\/span><\/p>\n

You are given two candies. You say, “But I asked for ‘aye’ candy, not two.” (\/e\u026a\/).<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Another example:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Right now we are talking about this article and when we talk about the article \u201ca\u201d in isolation we are emphasizing it so we might use \u201cei\u201d because it\u2019s easier to highlight it that way.\u00a0<\/span>But again 90% of the time, use the schwa if you are just speaking normally.<\/span><\/p>\n

To give you a few more details we are going to pull a few quotes from real native speakers<\/a> because that\u2019s who really knows.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if the grammar books<\/a> tell us something is a rule it really doesn\u2019t matter if you are saying something correctly but everyone else is saying it in the \u201ccasual, street\u201d way.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s grab a couple of quotes from this forum.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

“Count me in with the “\/ay\/ for emphasis only” crowd: “That’s A book, but it’s not THE book we’re supposed to read.” If I heard someone saying “I saw \/ay\/ student reading \/ay\/ book” without emphasizing the articles, I’d assume that he was either a foreigner or an eccentric.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s interesting this same rule applies to the article \u201cthe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

When you want to emphasize something you say \u201cthe\u201d like \u201cthee\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that you know that \u201ca\u201d can be pronounced in two different ways and you know why, try to listen for these differences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pay attention when someonoe is trying to emphasize something or make an idea stand out because that\u2019s when they\u2019ll use \u201cei\u201d or \u201cthee\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once you hear it and get comfortable starting to use these variations\u00a0to sound more interesting it\u2019s all about getting more rythm and personality in your voice.<\/span><\/p>\n
