{"id":51715,"date":"2017-10-20T21:50:38","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T21:50:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/aee\/one-news-article-practice-ielts-skills\/"},"modified":"2022-04-24T11:16:07","modified_gmt":"2022-04-24T11:16:07","slug":"one-news-article-practice-ielts-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/one-news-article-practice-ielts-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Ways to Use One News Article to Practice IELTS Skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You know that you should be <strong>reading the newspaper<\/strong> during your IELTS preparation, but how?<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re just <a href=\"\/ielts\/ielts-energy-432-lessons-ekaterinas-ielts-journey-overall-7-5\/\">reading articles a couple times a week, even one a day<\/a>, there are specific things you could do to <strong>exploit each article<\/strong> in order to <strong>learn more<\/strong> and <strong>practice skills<\/strong> directly related to IELTS.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Go through these steps 2-3 times a week.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Choose the article<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You should be reading an article from a <strong>different section<\/strong> each time.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the <strong>Washington Post<\/strong> has the following sections: <strong>Politics, Opinions, Sports, Local, National, World, Business, Tech, Lifestyle <\/strong>and<strong> Entertainment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You can see that these <a href=\"\/ielts\/ielts-energy-406-writing-topics-ielts-top-score\/\">correspond to IELTS topics<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>In order to <strong>expand your base of knowledge<\/strong>, so <a href=\"\/ielts\/netflix-resources-prepare-ielts-topics\/\">you have ideas for any question you face on the Speaking and Writing<\/a> tests, you should expose yourself to as much <strong>variety of information<\/strong> in English as possible.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Practice skimming<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/ielts\/ielts-reading-strategy-skimming\/\">Read the beginning of every paragraph<\/a>\u2013 the <strong>first line<\/strong> for <strong>shorter<\/strong> paragraphs, the <strong>first 2 lines<\/strong> of <strong>longer<\/strong> paragraphs.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Don\u2019t underline key words.<\/strong><\/span> Just <strong>follow<\/strong> under the whole line with your pen\/pencil to <strong>help<\/strong> you <strong>focus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Then, <strong>write down what you remember<\/strong>. Try to write the <strong>main idea<\/strong> of the article.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Practice scanning<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/ielts\/video-lesson-vital-ielts-reading-strategy-scanning\/\">Scan the article for names and numbers<\/a>. <strong>Circle<\/strong> every name and number that you see.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, you could also <a href=\"\/ielts\/ielts-reading-keywords\/\">scan for parallel expressions<\/a> for the topic. For instance, if the article is about \u2018<em>business<\/em>\u2018, you can circle all the words <strong>associated<\/strong> with this word, such as \u2018<em>money<\/em>\u2018, \u2018<em>company<\/em>\u2018, \u2018<em>trade<\/em>\u2018 or \u2018<em>export<\/em>\u2018.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Don\u2019t let yourself read the article<\/strong><\/span>\u2013 scanning is not reading!
