Should you use gestures to help them guess?<\/p>\n<p>Find out today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A practical example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to the past tense of some English verbs like &#8220;swim&#8221; even native speakers get confused.<\/p>\n<p>The correct forms are: swim, swam, swum but it sounds weird to us to say &#8220;swim.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-823-3-types-native-speakers-connect\/\"> native speaker <\/a>might talk about this verb and use a different word to avoid using it in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/confusing-english-word\/\">past tense.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s take a question from a listener:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong> What should I do when I can\u2019t recall the past tense of an irregular verb during a conversation? <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>For example, I want to say &#8220;I flew from New York to Boston&#8221;, but I don\u2019t know the past tense of the verb &#8220;fly\u201c. Perhaps the best way would be to rephrase and say\u00a0something like &#8220;I took a plane\u2026,&#8221; but lets say I can\u2019t come up with it at the moment. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>And I don\u2019t want to look it up because I don\u2019t want to lose connection! Is it okay to say &#8220;I did fly from\u2026&#8221;, or use the regular pattern &#8220;I flied from\u2026&#8221; or just to use the present tense &#8220;I fly from..&#8221;? <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Which one of them would sound the least unnatural? <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Or is it better to say &#8220;I\u2026. what is the past tense of fly?\u2026&#8221;.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong> Another example would be &#8220;I left something at home&#8221;, &#8220;I wore a jacket\u201c, &#8220;I swam\u201c, &#8220;I sold my car\u201c etc.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Great question!<\/p>\n<p>We all deal with this.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re going to give you a list of steps in the right order of things to try.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>First rephrase it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Instead of using that specific verb where you don&#8217;t know the past tense, try <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a different one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So instead of &#8220;I flew&#8221; you could say &#8220;I took a flight,&#8221; or\u00a0 &#8220;I was on a flight.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What if you can\u2019t come up with other ways to rephrase it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should be building your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-655-smartest-fastest-way-understand-80-vocabulary-words-english\/\">vocabulary<\/a> so that you can quickly substitute in something else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can you do this?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you speak English and you use a phrase like &#8220;I rode my bike to work today&#8221; you should also always be brainstorming in your mind another way to say that such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I took my bike to work today.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>I got to work today by bike.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you do this often as an exercise in your head then you will always have another phrase available if you need it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What NOT to do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t use \u201cdid.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It builds a bad habit and it doesn\u2019t make sense to put did in there by saying \u201cI did fly\u201d when you wanted to say \u201cI flew\u201dunless you are asserting something because it changes the meaning. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A: You didn\u2019t fly to Boston. You took a bus, right?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B: No, No I <em>did<\/em> fly to Boston.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this case &#8220;I did&#8221; changes the feeling and the meaning of what you are saying. You are disagreeing with what the person said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Should you use the incorrect past tense?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You asked if you should just use the incorrect past tense when you can&#8217;t think of the correct one like \u201dI flied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On one hand we focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/english-podcast-listeners-connection-not-perfection\/\">Connection not Perfection<\/a> here so if you must just get your point across to connect then say it wrong, but there is a better way and that is our next point.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just ask<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think that asking for help is ideal.<\/p>\n<p>As long as the\u00a0person has time and seems willing you could build a nice connection by asking someone for a little help.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t need to be a huge deal.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not like you are asking them to sit down and give you a full English lesson.<\/p>\n<p>You could gesture that the action happened in the past and say \u201cI fly yesterday\u201d how do you say that again?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>TAKEAWAY:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t cement bad habits. Prioritize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-600-celebrate-600-dont-write-off-connection-pursuit-perfection\/\">Connection,\u00a0<\/a>but don\u2019t make that an excuse not to ask for the correct way to say something.<\/p>\n<p>Ask people you like to help you.
